Re: "thats not really NY"
let me throw a little bit of fuel to this one (since it's a slow day at work)
**born in queens, grew up out west, now i live in nj**
the statue of liberty isn't in new york, she's technically in new jersey.

Maybe because I am from Queens but didn't the person just mean that you aren't from NYC - which technically, Long Island isn't part of the five boroughs so it isn't part of NYC. . .am I being dense here?
Yeah, but Queens and Brooklyn are still ON LI. Not that it really matters, but it cracks me up when people forget that really, we all live on LI
i will deny it 'til my dying day.

When I went to Hawaii, everyone I came in contact said, "where are you from, you have a funny accent?" When I would reply New York, they would say "where, upstate?"
I'm like NO, NYC. How many people from upstate NY really go to Hawaii? AND, upstate NY is NOT famous like NYC is. I don't get it.
just curious as to why you would think that people from upstate would not be going to Hawaii?
Its refreshing though to hear that OOT's can relate to other parts of NY besides LI and NYC considering they only make up a very small part of the state.

To me, that's kind of like saying if you are American but you say you are from Canada. Being adjacent does not mean it is the same thing.

I'm not saying they don't go to Hawaii. What I mean is do they really meet THAT many people from upstate NY? One would think they meet more people from NYC, since it is more densly populated, at least I would. AND, why would they say "upstate NY" like it is the neighborhood. If you have from upstate, you don't say 'upstate' you would usually say WHERE upstate, the county or town or whatever. KWIM?

Actually, you're not from NYC (New York City) if you're from Long Island. From NY, yes, but not NYC.

I've met some "upstaters" (way upstate) who said NYC AND Long Island were not really New York, according to them.
that's why our licence plates got changes to images of niagra falls, etc. Because New York State residents thought the Statue of Liberty was too New York City-centric.
actually the statue of liberty was removed from NY plates because as of 1998..(I think that was the year) it was declared that NJ actually owns lady liberty...and Ellis Island is in NY

I never thought of the statue as NY-centric - I think of it as AMERICA-centric.

So when someone asks me where I'm FROM should I say Philadelphia, since I was born there, but only lived there until I was 6?
Or Delaware, since I was raised there?
Or State College, since I lived there for 4 years?
Or Long Island since I lived there for five years?
Or NJ since I live here now?

i think where you were raised is where you are from.
like i was born in one town , but i grew up in another and then moved on form there. but i always say hte town i'm "from" is teh one i grew up in.
eta: for example, i have lived in Brooklyn for 5 years now, but i dont say i am "from" brooklyn. i say i'm from hauppage, long island
