no ones causing drama - like others said, its important that people donate blood (there is a shortage on LI right now!!!) and to post non factual items on a website that might inhibit someone not to donate is a threat to all of us who may need a blood transfusion in the future!

As someone who recently had to have a blood transfusion during heart surgery, I am GLAD that there are all these strict measures in place and I also have a tattoo.
What if they did not test it or hold the blood for a year? Then what? I could get hep B or something worse. I hope BOTH sides of this issue are clearly stated and the people who are fighting the strict blood donation guidelines realize that they are in place for a reason.
Put yourself in the position of what if I needed blood ASAP? I am willing to bet they would want the purest, cleanest, tested blood around.
I agree 100%
My DD had to have a transfusion when she was less than 2 days old. Even with all of the testing currently in place I was still worried. It's hard enough to ok an order for a transfusion for your loved one... you are already worrying about their condition (and at the time the doctors could not rule out a life threatening condition for my DD) you do not need to worry about the condition of the blood.
I'm sorry you feel discriminated against but isn't the delicate health of the person who needs the transfusion the bigger issue here than refusing the blood of someone who has recently had a tatoo?
Please consider the other side. Everything possible should be done to maintain a healthy and safe blood supply.

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....
I too had surgery and needed a transfusion of 2 pts. I pre-donated for myself to ensure the safest possible transfusion if I needed it. If I didn't need it, it would have been tossed. That doesn't undergo the rigorous testing that regular donated blood goes through. I thought that was horrible. I wanted someone to be able to use it if I went through that, but they don't test that blood so they toss it.
This is the only instance I know of where donated blood is tossed. If your blood cannot be used for transfusion it is used for testing. Either way, your blood will be used for something useful. If it's not transfused it wil be used for testing for other diseases that could save lives indirectly.
Blood will also get tossed after a certain number of days if it's not used.
Please continue to donate whether you think it will be used for transfusion or not. There is no downside.
I cannot donate again until next year due to my surgery.
