I believe that there are a lot of false perceptions of LI, just like any other place in the country.

I heard my neighbor say he was from Lawn-Guyland this past weekend and I fell out in laughter.

I have not heard that accent in ages.

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think of Long Island is that accent.

i think peoples' perceptions are this:

everyone is rich
everyone is snobby
everyone is cookie cutter
everyone is white
everyone dresses the same
everyone drives the same car

I think that's just the north shore perception.

I think there is a very big difference with how people view the north shore vs. south shore and nassau vs. suffolk.

When I first moved here that became immediately apparent to me. Fair or not.

It is the perception of the North Shore. I am from the North Shore and I hear that a lot. Basically, people think you are a snot who had everything handed to them.

Re: You're from LI?

people are more ostentatious about their money, aka "neuvo riche ",

in addition

the accent which, after moving out of NY, I notice is very heavy on LI.

things like-
whateva
caw-fee
freakin
oh my gawd

Yup. Can't even tell you the kind of comments I've gotten when I tell people I'm from Great Neck - and this from people in the Philadelphia area. People outside of LI are clearly cognizant of the north shore/south shore generalizations.

I don't live on LI, but I have family that do.

I can tell you also, that between this website and LIW, my preconceived notions have both be proven true and in some cases, blown to bits.

Some of the things that you guys don't see, outsiders do. Even the things you deny.

From a NYC perspective, I would say they have the Amy Fisher/Joey Buttofuoco view.

I think they know the city & the Hamptons. Everything in between is filled with "townies"

Most people have no idea what LI is. They associate NY with NYC. I always get the "You don't have a NY accent." comment, too. No, I'm not from Brooklyn or the Bronx where it is most heavy. Chat Icon (No offense on purpose to anyone from those boroughs, it's just where the accent is heaviest)

I think it's the view LI'ers have of the North Shore.

I've been told by people that met me from this site that I'm not what they imagined because of my screen name.

i know no differences between north shore vs south or suffolk vs nassua to be honest. mainly becaus ei havent spent enough time in each.
so, i think someone who has never been to LI wouldnt know the differences either.

Right, but her question was how do you think people from NYC view LI and I think they are close enough to know that.

At least in my experience.

Plus, I grew up in Delaware and worked at the beach every summer. We may not have known "shores" but we definitely knew there were two types of Long Islanders.

i disagree. i dont think people in the city would know the difference. i htink its mainly a LI'ers view.

unless you've been to those places, you wouldnt know.

jmo

I agree with Jes, before I started dating someone from Long Island I didn't know the north shore from the south shore and only that Suffolk county was really far away. I grew up in western Queens and never went to even eastern queens until I was out of school.

I agree with this. I'm from Brooklyn - I never knew anything about north shore/south shore until I joined LIW!! And I'll admit that I generalized all of long island as rich/snobby people with big houses and expensive cars. I don't hold this belief anymore but that was my general assumption before I really knew anyone out here.

And that's the great thing about this thread...I'm basing my response on my experiences, you are basing your response on yours.

I think the perception is that LI'ers live 20 miles away from the greatest city in the world and never visit. I also think that Long Island never changes, it's always the same.

I remember when I went away to college and would come home for breaks and think to myself "this place is like Brigadoon--frozen in time"

People who are not from LI feel the need to say "LAWN GUYLAND" as they make fun of its inhabitants. I have never said "Long Island" that way and frankly, I do not know anyone who does."

Re: You're from LI?

Being a Queens girl, I can say that Ive heard and still hear to this day, that Long Islanders are not as friendly, you'll never meet your neighbors, etc.

I think just the lifestyle (backyards, boating, etc.) is so different from Queens (growing up playing hide and seek on the sidewalk out front and knowing the whole neighborhood).

So Queens people do miss that connection that comes with "the neighborhood".

This is very true. I teach in the city and this is the perception students AND teachers have of Long Island. As soon as I say I live on LI the comment is "oh you must be rich, what are you doing here?" It is very frustrating to have people believe these misconceptions. I have actually had students call me "rich girl" when they find out where I live. Believe me we are definetly NOT rich BECAUSE we live on LI.
