has anyone ever asked you where you are from.....
you say "new york".
they reply "what part?"
you say "Long Island"
they say "Well, thats not really new york"
W. T. F. ?!?!?!?!!
ive gotten this on a few occasions.
YES i am REALLY from NEW YORK.
and these are usually the people who tell you they are from NY and i reply "oh yeah, what part?"
they say "well, i was BORN in Ohio, but ive been here for almost 8 years"
8 years. wowwwwwwwwwwww! youre not from NY dude.

I've never gotten that before but I would probably laugh at someone if they said that to me because last time I checked, Long Island wasn't a state of it's own... people can be so dumb 
FH gets a lot of flack from his family members though... he was born and raised right outside of Albany but moved down here 3 years ago and his family members always ask him "How's city life?" He just stopped telling them that he's NOT in the city, he's in suburbia USA.

I've met some "upstaters" (way upstate) who said NYC AND Long Island were not really New York, according to them.

i have had people who were born and live in nyc say that to me.
a woman i used to work with grew up in manhattan. when i first started working here (ETA: not in new york state) we were chatting and i said "oh, i am originally from ny too." she said "what part?" and when I said LI - that's exactly what she said to me.
to be honest, it came off pretty snobbish - like LI didn't count bc it wasn't "as good as" nyc.

that's why our licence plates got changes to images of niagra falls, etc.
Because New York State residents thought the Statue of Liberty was too New York City-centric.

i think you mean the american falls, but thats dumb, we should have the statue of liberty IMO.

When I went to Hawaii, everyone I came in contact said, "where are you from, you have a funny accent?" When I would reply New York, they would say "where, upstate?"
I'm like NO, NYC. How many people from upstate NY really go to Hawaii? AND, upstate NY is NOT famous like NYC is. I don't get it.

Yes and there is also the Bridal Veil in America. Horseshoe falls is in Canada. Collectively they are referred to as Niagra falls.

we're ALL from NY. no matter if youre from LI, SI, Brk, Que, Brx, Manh, or upstate.

Maybe because I am from Queens but didn't the person just mean that you aren't from NYC - which technically, Long Island isn't part of the five boroughs so it isn't part of NYC. . .am I being dense here?

Yeah, but Queens and Brooklyn are still ON LI. Not that it really matters, but it cracks me up when people forget that really, we all live on LI
