Giving blood & Tattoos.....

just wanted to let you know a little secret that i heard.

most blood donation places will not let you give blood if you have gotten a tattoo within the last year due to things that could be in your blood form needles. thats understandbale.

WELL, even if you have a tattoo at all they wont use it!

its really messed up, i think. i know a lot of artists fighting this.

so, i just wanted to give a heads up. now i know i will not be donating since they are just going to toss it when i leave. its really sad.

i am goign to look further into this because some of it doesnt make any sense.

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

Actually, it's a year. I had to wait a year after my tat to give blood again.

They do this because of hepatitis. You can contract it from the needle and it can take up to a year to "come out".
Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon :huggy

ETA: I've never heard of them throwing it out after the year. I donate platelets and I can't imagine that they would have me on that machine for two hours to throw away the platelets.

Besides, if they were throwing it away, why do they start calling me as soon as the year is up?

Whenever DH and I got ours our artist told us it was always a year. I never heard of them throwing away blood.

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

I think the questionaire only asks if you have had a tatoo in the last 12 months. So, if you have a tatoo that is covered by clothes, how will they know if you EVER had one?
Plus, why would they take the liability of drawing the blood knowing they will automatically toss it? That doesn't make sense to me.....

they don't toss it. If they feel it's blood that they can't transfuse, they will use it for testing. I'm sure they will transfuse your blood after a year if it tests fine.

As someone who recently had to have a blood transfusion during heart surgery, I am GLAD that there are all these strict measures in place and I also have a tattoo.

What if they did not test it or hold the blood for a year? Then what? I could get hep B or something worse. I hope BOTH sides of this issue are clearly stated and the people who are fighting the strict blood donation guidelines realize that they are in place for a reason.

Put yourself in the position of what if I needed blood ASAP? I am willing to bet they would want the purest, cleanest, tested blood around.

I would definitely check into that. It doesn't seem logical.
Besides, they do very thorough testing on all the blood so why would they toss good blood?

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

I had to have 2 blood transfusions in an emergency situation a couple of years ago and it was the most petrifying thing I've ever gone through. I rather they be as cautious as possible when screening blood and determining what can be used.

Even afterwards I had to go and get tested for diseases because I've had transfusions and my doctor told me that eventually when I go to get life insurance they will require that I get tested again for Hepatitis and HIV.

It's very nice that you donate blood and I am very grateful that people do, but I am happy that every precaution is taken.

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

I tried to give blood at my school's blood drive once. One of the questions was something along the lines of, "Have you spent a total of 1 (or was it 2?) years in Great Britain or the Republic or Ireland?" Since I used to fly free and my parents are from Ireland, I would sometimes spend summers there, go for 2 weeks at Christmas, another 1 week for Easter, etc. Since I had to add up all the time spent there, I was denied because there is a possibility that I could have been exposed to Mad Cow Disease!!! They said I'm exempt forever!!!! It doesn't make sense to me. So, people in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland can't give blood?????

You are right, I am from England and used to give blood twice a year, when I came here I was told I couldn't give blood because of the worry of CJD (the human form of mad cow) I think they told me for 10 years, but the funny thing is in the UK they test for it when you give blood and you have to carry a card (well this was 8 years ago, it may have changed) It is a shame, my Grandmother had two blood transfusions that saved her life and I used to like to donate cos I felt I was giving something back.

Do you have any evidence to back up this claim that they throw the blood away if you have tattoos?

I find it very hard to believe that they would waste the resources to take your blood only to have to dispose of it.

ITA...it just doesn't seem logical

i'm very glad they take things like hep/HIV seriously and make people wait or not be allowed to give at all. when you're talking about someone else's life, safety is what matters most.

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

I'm still curious to know if you have any hard evidence on this - a news article, anything reliable.

Otherwise, it's a bit misleading to post it as absolute fact...

i think you misunderstood what i was saying.

i am all for waiting a year or whatever until giving blood after getting a tattoo.

i was *told* that even if you got your last tattoo 5 years ago, they will TAKE your blood but never use it.

so.... my point is, why even bother taking it in the first place?

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

there is a MAJOR blood shortage on LI right now. I can't see the NY Blood Center "throwing out" perfectly clean blood. Not sure who told you, but they dont throw out blood if you have a tatoo - like above posters said, you have to wait a year because certain diseases can hide for up to a year that transfer thru needles.

Im glad to see that you would donate if you could!!

Told by whom? I think we're trying to figure out how reliable your source was. Many people say/believe things that just aren't true.

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

Blood is never tossed out. It is used in testing studies and research for tests. It is just not transfussed. I used to give platlets all the time and I was only told of the 1 year wait after a tattoo.

Makes no sense whatsoever. How would they know your last tattoo was five years? Or twenty?
The form asks about the past twelve months ... and hopefully when it gets filled out, people don't lie.

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

Boy, I hope that's not true. They bark up my tree every 56 days or whatever it is. I stopped going as frequently because it was getting overwhelming for me. So I decided to change it to twice a year, but if they are only going to throw it out because I got a tattoo when I was 18 then I won't bother going at all!

Please don't get upset until we have the facts. Note that the OP has given NO factual proof to back this up -- and if you read all the posts, it's really unlikely what was posted is actually true. They have no way if knowing when you last had a tattoo, other than what they ask on the form - and they only ask about the last year.

Re: Giving blood & Tattoos.....

I thought they test the blood from donations before they use it? Wouldn't they be able to see who's blood can be transfused and who's can't Chat Icon

I am a huge fan of blood donations!
