Was this really necessary?
I went on vacation from Wed of last week until Sunday and just returned today. Before I left I made sure I took care of what needed to be taken care of, updated everyone on what was goin on etc, left my passwords to my email with my co-worker and felt I was good to go!!So I thought!!
The 1st day I landed in Florida not even 2 hours later, the job calls me. Actually my co-worker who has my cell phone called me (bad part about being friends with someone on the job outside of work). I didn't pick up. She left me a voice-mail re: work and I was SO MAD!! Mad because they KNEW I would be away, I kept updating them and yet and still they decide something is urgent and felt the need to call me, and disturb me while I was away. All they had to do was check my email and see what they had asked for was already done!! There is NO reason why I should have been called at all!!!
Now..I'm due to go on maternity leave soon, but after this I want to push up the date to ASAP (as in next Monday). I'm just wondering..are they going to do the same thing when I'm on leave? I hope not, because I won't pick up. Leave is just that LEAVE, and vacation is VACATION!!! I don't think it's right at all! I am not a high powered person here, nor is my job THAT difficult for them to be calling me while I am on VACATION or LEAVE!!! No where in the contract I signed did it say I had to be available 24 hours a day - 7 days a week, and for them to have done this, just makes me wonder what I have to look forward to while I'm out on leave!!!!
Vent over!

Simply turn off your phone/blackberry and let them figure it out. That's how you will train them.
You can also just not answer. After a few days, they will figure it out.

I don't have a blackberry THANK GOD nor would I ever accept one. Like I said my job is not THAT important but they make it seem like it's life and death over here when it isn't!!
The problem is my co-worker is also my friend (before I started working here). They know this and they always ask for her to call me or me to call her. I don't agree with that at all and I am going to let them know.

When I am on vacation , or just a plain day off, that means I am OFF. I don't answer my phone, or check my email. Simple as that.

Is your company large enough to have an HR department?
If so, I would speak to them.

Re: Was this really necessary?
I thought this would happen while I was on maternity. I let them know that I am o nmaternity LEAVE and gave them contacts of who would be in charge of what and they can contact them. This way, if they do call you, say - oh, I left it with so-and-so and you will have to check with them. You aren't giving them the satisfaction of an easy answer. Do that once or twice and they will learn...

I think it all depends on your occupation and your job. I work in the legal field and I am expected to be available at all times (vacation, maternity leave, etc.). If I weren't, I would be out of a job.

Re: Was this really necessary?
I actually had a boss who wanted me to give her my phone number where I was staying when I went away on vacation. I refused to give it to her. I was actually staying at my mom's house, and wouldn't you know...she tried to look up my mom's number while I was away. Thank goodness she couldn't remember the name of the town my mom lived in!

That's exactly what I did..but somehow I just feel like it was wrong of them to contact me to begin with. If it weren't for the fact that she and I are "friends" then I believe they would have taken measures to "look" before they called and the fact that I am not obliged to be available to them during vacation is another factor as well.
I cannot say I will be as helpful during my leave.

Re: Was this really necessary?
My office called me when I went on Maternity leave for the first 2 weeks. I would sometimes let the machine pick up and call back later or answer the phone. Part of me felt bad because the girl they hired was horirble so I felt like I owed it to them.
But it seems like you did your part and I would have ignored all phone calls. It's not your problem that they are lazy and don't want to look for an email to get their answer.
