Citizen Kane Poll

So the AFI just named Citizen Kane the top movie of all time again.

Have you ever seen it?

I finally wanted to see what all the hub-bub was about and was EXTREMELY disappointed.

It was so damn boring.

Yes we rented it to see what all the hype was about and we looked at each other afterwards likeChat Icon . I thought it was awful. Maybe for the time it was made it was a masterpiece...I dont know. Not my cup of tea.

Re: Citizen Kane Poll

I really just couldn't see what all the hype was about. We watched it like 3 times in my screenplay class in high school and discussed it for hours...every little detail. I actually have a great dislike for the film now because of that.

When I was a senior in college I had a boyfriend who said, "Wow, I can't believe I'm dating someone who's never seen Citzen Kane."

I should have said, "I can't believe I'm dating such a pompous @ss."

Needless to say, it was insufferably dull. (the movie and the boyfriend) Chat Icon

I LOVED it!! I saw it in college. I just thought the final scene explained so much of the movie- without needing to express it in dialogue. You ahve to remember, it was made before everyone had a basic understanding of psychology - before you had a Dr. Phil on every TV show explaining why someone does something.

I think Citizen Kane, like so many of Hitchcock's film, use devices that today are so cliche.

I have seen it and I would rank it between masterpiece and OK (but I voted OK). As MsMBV said, I think for its time, it was genius and it was pretty creative and daring at the time it was made. To rate it using today's standards is difficult.

Re: Citizen Kane Poll

I have my undergraduate degree in film (I don't say this b/c I think I'm more qualified to have an opinion - I just think I look at the film from a slightly different perspective than most people). I always loved Citizen Kane. I think one of the big reasons why it's the best film of all time has a lot to do with its position in the history of filmmaking more than anything else. There were so many cinematic concepts that basically began in Citizen Kane and were executed flawlessly - the photography is phenomenal. Every frame is a work of art. The story is told not just with words, but in pictures. The set, the wardrobe, the cinematography, etc. are all meticulously crafted to emphasize and help tell the story. I honestly think it is a masterpiece.

I actually like the story, too... but I guess it's not for everyone!

At the same time, film exists to entertain ultimately... so if no one likes it, it's not much good - save for being a medium of self-expression.

This will sound very strange, but I always think of Citizen Kane when I think of another one of my favorite movies - Garden State... mainly because I thought the attention to detail in the making of both films is startling and sheer genius.

I'll go hide under my film geek rock now! Chat Icon
