If you were going through a rough time financially
and your child was having a birthday, would you prefer something useful like clothes so that you didn't have to spend on that yourself, or something fun like a toy?
DH's cousin in Ohio recently went through a rough divorce and has 3 kids. The middle one will be 3 and we can't decide what to send.
Any suggestions for a good toy for a 3yo girl would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I would buy clothes instead of a toy.

Re: If you were going through a rough time financially
I would send a small gift (clothes/toy) for the child to open and play with. and maybe a bond with the rest. (depending on how much you wanted to spend).

I would send a small gift for the child to open and maybe a gift certificate to Target, Kmart, etc so the parents can put it towards something the child really needs.

I'd send both. Clothes are more useful, but 3 is old enough to want something fun too!

Thanks everyone! I wanted to send clothes, DH didn't want to "insult" her.

Both clothes and a toy. You can find some nice things at reasonable prices at Target. Heck, if you shop the sales racks in the mall you can find great buys. I NEVER pay full price on baby clothes.
