it blew me away this morning...
can people debunk it?

personally speaking, the best show, best finale i have ever seen. ever. ever ever.

let me first say that david chase not only ended his show, he told you and SHOWED you how...and we all saw it. yep. with our own two eyes.

people are simply forgetting how chase uses symbolism in such a brilliant way to tell tony's story.

first, right before tony goes to sleep at the end of episode 85, tony has a flashback to him and bobby in the boat with bobby saying 'you probably dont even hear it when it happens. just goes black'.

next, think back to the first episodes of season 6 part 1 called 'join the club' where we see tony in a coma as kevin finnerty. the next episode was titled 'MEMBERS ONLY' where tony shows up to a family 'reunion' where 'they' have been expecting him. he looks up and sees the treetops, hearing his daughters voice saying 'daddy dont go'.

now think to when tony was cleaning his yard just before carmella came out and told him where they will be eating dinner. tony looks up at the (dead) trees, and faintly in the background you heard the ducks. yup, very distant. but they are 'gone'. this is reinforced when tony tells uncle junior 'enough with the birds already' in the very next scene.

cut to the final scene in the ice cream shop. tony casually looks people over that come in, and notice the people in the diner loosely represent people in tony's life who have been affected by him without his knowing. cub scouts from the episode prior in the trainstore, trucker from dvd heist, black gang members from the botched hit on tony perhaps...all chases symbolism. carmella arrives. we hear the bell as the door opens, people walking in one at a time. when we see aj, he walks in right behind the suspected 'hitman'.

also aj references what his father once told him at a family dinner at vesuvio's: remember the good times.
this is about to be the last 'good time' tony has with his family, or with anyone for that matter.

notice that no stranger looks at tony except this 'hitman' character, who in the end credits is listed as the 'man in the MEMBERS ONLY jacket'. this isn't coincidence in david chase's world. not only is he the only person in the scene the camera shows you looking at tony, the camera pulls back to show him walking in the bathroom...not to get a gun behind a toilet, but to get a better shot on tony, as the camera shot shows us. no one is in the hitmans line of sight, since meadow is 'late' for dinner and not sitting next to tony.

notice the man resembles tony's father. he is there to take tony to the 'MEMBERS ONLY' club.

last 3 shots we see: 1: meadow (seeing what tony doesnt-the 'daddy dont go' moment of sorts). 2: tony, hearing a bell, looking up at meadow. 3: BLACK: he never saw or HEARD it coming. no end music during the credits.

how many times have characters in this show (livia, aj, tony, even uncle jun) eluded to it all being a big black nothing?

david chase didnt **** the bed and not know how to end his story, he wrote it in a way that absolutly ended it, told you how it would happen, and even showed you. he also lets people who only take it at face value to conjur up their own ending if they so choose (dont stop believing, anyway you want it), but david chase has abosolutely ended the story.

aj's 'america' speech comes true. after getting his materialist possessions and comfort, its all for nothing as he sees his father die in front of him. all you are left with is ****.

oh, and the motive for tony's killing... revenge for phil being killed in front of his family.

and as for how...this is tricky and not so clear cut. the only people supposedly who know tony is there at that diner are his immediate family, and the feds! because prior we see tony's phone being tapped by the fbi during his call to the high level new york 'peacemaker'. so if the fbi gave away that information, who would it be? perhaps the 'brooklyn' contact who tony's fbi guy ****** for the location of phil, who was obviously slighted when he gave that info to tony. maybe...but i think the end result is the true importance here, and not knowing why is also very appropriate for this show.

but all in all david chase ended this story brilliantly intertwining symbolism and realism. perhaps in time he will say things that may let on his intentions, but maybe not. its really sad that everyone is panning this ending because it was not spelled out for the common viewer in a cookie cutter fashion, or gave 'closure' that people seemed to expect, from a show that never follows convention. hopefully, in time people will realize this ending was truely amazing and ahead of it's time.

hope this gives some insight and 'closure' for those who seek it.

ets: sounds perfect, especially considering the interview he gave to the Newark Star Ledger this morning where he says "watch it- it's all there"

ITA- it makes sense

esp- the Members only jacket- that has been a big theme- Richie Aprile- when he gets out of Jail- wears one all the time- the makes comments- but Richie felt slighted - like he was "real" memeber but not getting respect

I have been rewatching old ones and A&E and picking up on tons of stuff I missed

Re: has this been posted

Regardless of what we think of the final minutes, the entire episode sucked.

I'm not buying into the "Chase is a genius" thing. I understand that being unconventional may be an excuse for not tying up loose ends but there have been a ton of dropped story lines and there has been symbolism that never amounted to anything. The fact that we can look back over so many years of episodes and find something to grasp at does not mean that the writer is such a genius. He definitely wanted there to be several interpretations of the ending. I'm not sure who came up with the idea that less intelligent people who take things at face value are the people who didn't like the ending. That's insulting to viewers, who are entitled to opinions.

I rewatched the end- Tony arrived first. So, he could have been followed by the other guy.

This is the ONLY thing that can be debunked, but it doesn't matter, the rest all makes sense.

Last night FH and I went back to the episode where Tony had the flashback. It wasn't a flashback of Bobby saying "just goes black", it's of Bobby saying "You don't even see it coming" and Tony says something like "I don't know, why don't you ask your friend on the wall..."

This still iludes to the fact that they're talking about what happens when you die.

I loved the way it ended, I know it got so many people's panties in a twist, but I liked it... it left the whole show to interpretation.

Re: has this been posted

well i guess after reading this it kind of makes sense why they focused on Meadow having so much trouble parallel parking. because she was so late, it gave the hitman an open shot at Tony.

thanks to everyone who's posting their theories, i'm really not that deep and never would've gotten this stuff without seriously thinking long and hard about it! Chat Icon

but they also made a point of letting us know the phone was tapped

the brooklyn office was making a case against Phil- and now all there work was for Nothing- so I bet they were ****** that Phil got whacked and that on of there own helped

I think that is BRILLIANT!

You really would have had to have watched FAITFULLY over the past 8 years to completely understand it.

Can't wait to go back and watch. I'll admit I didn't watch all of them because at one point it got boring.

Thanks for posting that!

Interesting theory but I'm not sure I buy it.

I thought the Dante's Inferno theory was one of the coolest Sopranos theories around until I read that David Chase said it was nonsense.

Reminds me of "Paul is dead". I think everyone is going to come up with their own theories & read into everything.
