How much to give for a wedding out of state?

I am planning to go to a wedding in November in Florida and wondered how much to give. I am going alone but her parents are my godparents and they used to live next door to me for many years.
I haven't been to a wedding in 5 years and have no clue how much I should give!!
Thanks!

I would base it on how much I spend to get there plus who it is and what kind of wedding it is

Ballpark figure: $100-150 if its just you

For southern weddings I would buy off the registry.

Agreed, Gifts are usually bought off the regisitry and given at the wedding down south...but again, its easier to give money...if its just you then 100-150, is plenty

I'm probably so cheap, but I think if you are travelling a long distance and paying for hotels etc, a token gift is all thats needed. So $25 - $50 maybe.

I had about 15 people travel from the UK to come to our wedding and I would have been mortified had they spent $100 on us, same with my family from out of town.

Well this is a very good friend. My parents knew them for 40 years. My mom is paying the airfare and hotel so this would be my only expense. I don't think I could give that low. My dh and I were actually thinking $300!!

Normally I'd agree, but having recently gone to a wedding out of state I will tell you that the bride & groom totally appreciated getting cash in an envelope...Chat Icon

(The wedding was in the groom's hometown in SC & they had to travel back to Memphis after the wedding, so I did not buy a gift from their registry b/c I knew they'd have to find a way to transport it back to TN.)

Reconsidering you don't have to pay airfare, about $150-$175 (but if your DH wants to "contribute", even though he is not going, you can give $300).

I think everyone appreciates cash Chat Icon, but a registry gift is also acceptable. You can always send the gift to the address on the registry ahead of time if you want to.

Otherwise, give what you can afford and what you want to based on your relationship to the couple and your travel expenses. I think $100-150 is perfectly fine, and I'd hesitate to give more than that (unless you are really close and can afford it) since you have to travel.

She was born and grew up in NY until her teens so it is not like they don't know what a NY wedding is.

I'm sorry, but $25-$50? That doesn't even fill up the gas tank these days.

I would give a$150 or $200.

I couldn't give less than $100 as a wedding gift, OOS or not. I would either give $ or a nice registry gift

lol- I have a family of 4 people come to my wedding and give $50.00... It was Dh's cousin- we kid that we couldn't even get a decent meal for $50.00 (and they aren't poor)

Anyway... I would give $100-$150 and maybe a small registry item too

I think $150 is fine. If youre not paying airfare and the hotel isnt that expensive, you could give $175 - $200.

I do NOT think $25-50 is appropriate

When my gf got married in 1994, she was living in TN and I did not go so I sent her $50 mostly because that is what she gave me when she came alone to my wedding.
$100 does not seem like enough as that was the standard I got and gave in 1993!!

Re: How much to give for a wedding out of state?

DH and I went to a wedding in Delaware, we gave $200 as a couple. I would say you'd be safe with $100 for just you.

I think anyone who invites OOT guests expects the gift to be less once traveling/hotel arrangements are figured.

You see, I agree with your first thoughts. Even though it's only you going, the gift is still from both of you. Also, considering that you are not footing the bill for the trip, I would give what I normally would at a local wedding. Since they are also former NYers (I am assuming), they would appreciate the monetary gift.

She is a former NY and her mom (my godmother), herself and brother came for my wedding and her mom and herself came to my sister's wedding. I wouldn't give as much if I wasn't so close for so many years.
I spoke with my sister and since she is taking her kids and in the wedding, she said she is going to give $300-$400. She thinks $200 should be fine since I am the only one going BUT I want the gift to be from me, my dh and kids.
I will need a dress and some spending money (but not much since I will only be there for the weekend).

I would give what you would normally give from you and your family. Once Dh and I were serious, I started giving gifts from both of us. That continues even though one of us may not attend a function. I went to a wedding in Maryland last year solo and gave the same gift. I drove down, stayed over in a hotel and got my hair done down there.

I can see where you are coming from but taking a trip to florida is a hell of a lot cheaper than flying over here from the UK. the ticket will probably cost $200 and you can go for as little as one night if that is your perogative. i would still give $100-150.
