Re: My Mom

I know it's scary, but Diabetes is a VERY managable disease and with the new medications many people who would otherwise be insulin dependent are not and can live normal lives. I don't know exactly how severe your mom is, but I know a lot of people with diabetes who do very well and have lived for a long time with the disease by taking care of themselves.

Re: My Mom

My Dad has diabetes. Sadly a lot of folks have it, but its very manageable. There are some great message boards my dad uses. I'll try and get them from him.

Re: My Mom

My mom was diagnosed 4 years ago with diabetes. She has been working with a nutritionist and has been able to stay away from insulin the whole time.

Diabetes can be very manageable. Check out the American Diabetes Association

They have a lot of info.

Please let me know if you need any other info or support. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I only know of one but it's more a support group but the posters will probably know websites for you to go to. www.diabeticmommy.com

They are very sweet on that board and very helpful. One poster is a certifiied diabetic educator so if you post any questions she may answer but most of the posters are NOT in the medical field, just mothers with Type 1 or Type 2.

Good luck to your mom - hard disease but it's manageable! (I had gd and I'm borderline T2 but I'm dieting so I hope not to be T2 at all!)

My dad was diagnosed with diabetes about 2-3 yrs ago, and he could have managed without insulin if he only watched his diet and exercised - which he didnt do - so now he needs insulin - please be sure that mom eats right and exersices - even if its a 15-20 min walk - EVERY day!!!!

My mom has it too (because of her immosupresant meds)..... anyway, it was very hard for her at first to manage it and learn what worked for her- but that really is the key... knowing what you can and cant eat or do based on the factors involved (what you ate that day, what time it is, etc...). I got her a couple of books... "Diabetes for Dummies" and a Cooking for Diabetes cook book- quick easy meals (i *think* it was Betty Crocker??). She swore by both of them for so long when she was first learning about it- and now uses them as a refernce if new questions arise.

Re: My Mom

Diabetes is very managable as long as the person does what the Dr. says. I know of two morons who did not take care of themselves and ended up in deep dung. My BFF had diabetes for 10 years and she took care of herself and now it is gone.

American Diabetes Association is a great site for information.

I'm sorry, honey. Don't worry. Very manageable. My MIL has had it for 35 years!

My cousin was diagnosed with diabetes and is on insulin. I actually bought him the cooking for diabetes cookbook-and I think it was Bety Crocker. My Aunt is a nurse, so she helps, but he loves the cookbook and uses it all the time.

Re: My Mom

Diabetes runs rampant in my family! My grandmother, great aunt and all 3 uncles have had it. But here's the good news - my youngest uncle was diagnosed with diabetes this January. He saw what happened with the others and he didn't want to be the same. He started going to the gym, dropped 30 lbs., changed his diet completely and after a few months his levels dropped down to normal!! It can be done!!!

Re: My Mom

Both of my parents have it but my dad's is worst. Fortunately, it is a manageable disease. My dad has to take his blood daily to see his sugar levels. He is on medication & is also on a strict Sugar Free diet.

My mom also was diagnosed with it but never put on medication. The doctor advised her to diet & see if that would eliminate the higher blood sugar. It did & so far, she has not been placed on medication.

I always look at the following site
