Freddy update
Freddy is kickin azz and takin names...
I participated in his PT yesterday along with my cousin. He was showing off! he was able to navigate the paralel bars and his one leg by himself..no one holding him. I cried..he cried..we all were very proud of him.
Insurance has approved another week at Jamaica but soon it will be time for him to go to another place. We took a tour of North Shore extended care the transitions program and liked it very much. Nice facility. Nice grounds and not everyone is a senior citizen. He can get therapy there and also participate in more recreational activities to help him get better. We may also be able to take him out to lunch..etc..
We have more to be optomistic about as he is becoming more self aware and more aware that he is in a hospital and will be for a while. He is getting more depressed so now we are trying to be there more.
Tomorrow is the pow wow with his rehab team and I will go with some of the family and bring him a yummy lunch. The food there is the worst of the worst hospital food. I hear North Shore isn't bad...also getting him to LI now is very important. We can all get there more easily and see him much more.
That's what he needs now..he needs his family.
I will start to look for an apartment for mom and dad so they can make plans to move back. Dad is somewhat apprehensive about it but anything he does there, he can do here..mom will be ecstatic. She never adjusted to AZ.
Anyone have a 1 bedroom apt ground floor for my folks? I guess soon I will need one for my brother as well.
Freddy told my cousin yesterday that he owes me big time..he told her I was the boss. I was shocked..I really didn't know that he understood as much.

Sounds like he's making a great comeback.
For the ground floor apartment, you may want to look into those elder villages.

Great to hear he is making progress!
You are truly an amazing person for handling all of this. Freddy has the best sister ever and I would certainly consider you an inspiration to all!
Unfortunately, I don't have any apartments to offer. But you should check the local pennysavers they usually have decent listings. That is how DH and I found our first apartment.

They are on a list for one in Deer park but the wait list is long..that's the case with most of the places. So if I want to bring them back sooner then I need a place now. I will also get them on the list for section 8 so when their number comes up they can get assistance. Same with Fred..sign them up together!
I know more about this crap than I ever wanted to.

thank you. My fantasy is for him is to enjoy the rest of his life doing something meaningful once he has completed the majority of his rehab. he is talking about going back to work. I am encouraging him. He knows he can't do the same thing but he wants to do something else..
who says he can't do the same thing? Once he learns how to navigate his prosthesis and is better brainwise I bet he could do something part time at least.
He needs to stay out of trouble.
he should also be able to dance at his son's wedding one day. Maybe even find love and get married again.
Fantasy..but I like it.

I am so happy to read this WODERFUL update! he is making progress at the speed of light. He has another chance at life now and it sounds like he is grabbing it by the horns.

He still has quite a bit to go. As well as he has been doing, he still is confused, has memory problems and word finding difficulties. It will take many months if not years of therapy. It's a marathon and I'm already exhausted.
Maybe once my folks get here permanently, I can get a break.
I haven't stopped to congratulate myself, but I know I've done everything I can.
