Had my wisdom tooth out on Monday....
OMG! The pain I went through to get that friggin tooth out was horrible, they had to hold me down cause I was almost jumping off the chair, it took them almost 3 hours to get the tooth out, I had to get 4 shots of novacaine, and it still didn't numb me enough, I felt everything!!!
My question is...for those who had theirs taken out, how long were you in pain for, and when could you eat normal foods again? I can only eat pastina and bread, and it KILLS! There is still a small whole where the tooth was and I'm so scared of food getting in it--lol I'm chewing on one side, but I didn't think I would be in this much pain, my mom had hers out and was eating nacho chips the same day.

I ate nothing but smoothies & jello for a week, maybe some pasta toward the end of that. But I had all 4 done at once, so maybe it'll be quicker for you.

I ate soup and ice cream for at least 3 days after
in regard to getting food stuck the best thing to do is rinse with warm salt water 3 times a day and then after you eat each time, the salt keeps the space really clean and makes it heal more quickly

i had one on each side done at once.. the first 2 days were painful.. hopefully the doc gave you some vicaden??? after that it was about a week until i could eat normal foods but it was about a month and half before that damn hole closed up.. all the food i ate got stuck in there!

Well the hole is half way closed up now, so hopefully it will not be that long--lol

Did your Dr tell you to becareful of the blood clot in the hole? My dentist said if it comes out I can bleed bad and I will have to see him again... I'm so nervous over this stupid tooth.

I also had all four of mine out-but I went under anesthesia...
It really hurt, but since I had all four out, my recovery time was longer-I remember lots of liquids and soup.

Yes the best way to avoid a blood clot is def NO using a straw, keep it clean, no smoking and thats about it
but def the first 2 days after the surgery definately rinse 3 times a day with warm salt water

Yeah thats what he told me, but do I still have to worry about the blood clot if I rinse now?

OMG! a month and a half!
Well the hole is half way closed up now, so hopefully it will not be that long--lol
mine were seriously impacted.. the hole was pretty big.

I would say start rinsing tommorrow and they also say to try to brush as normal as possible and just be gentle on the area that is open

Thanks for your help!
I'm such a baby when it comes to my teeth--lol I will rinse tomorrow and see how it goes, I am brushing like usual just gentile on that area.

I had my right upper tooth pulled out 10 days ago. I didn't have a lot of bleeding and just had a mild pain. I took Vicodin for just 1 day. For dinner that night, I had soup, chicken, mashed potato and veggies.

Good luck, I only know all of this beacuse for the past 2 years I have had so many root canals, wisdom teeth removed, its been awful but I learned a lot! Also one more thing, my oral surgeon said that actually leaving the hole open is the best to prevent clotting so you should be fine!

Yikes. Im sorry you went through that. I hope you feel better soon.
When I had mine done, 1st one I was 'out" 2nd one I was awake and it was like a 30 minute (total) procedure.
I ate yogurt, shakes, for a day or 2...Oh and soup.

WOWZA! And I just made an appt. to get my top two out... I might have to cancel that .
When I got the bottom two out it was a painful recovery because I clenched my jaw when I'm sleeping so I would wake up every morning for liek 2 weeks with pain in my jaw...
Everyone recovers differently, I know people who bruise really badly and I know others who go out partying that same night...

When I had mine out in Nov. 06, I would say it took a good 3 months before the "holey" area felt normal again and not gummy.

This is the scariest wisdom tooth thread I've ever read!!! Every other thread has been like "oh I got all four out and it was no big deal" - now the truth is out!!

Did you go to an oral surgeon or just a dentist? I had one with a regular dentist and had the same experience--took hours, incredibly painful, tons of swelling. It does take months for the hole to close completely. Was it a bottom tooth? That will take longer to heal. Continue with soft foods, liquids, etc., and the pain should be OK after 4 days or so.

I had IV sedation for my wisdom teeth. I can't believe you made it through that procedure without it. I woke up during the procedure, but they gave me more novacaine and I did fall back asleep.
I was in pain for about 3 days, but I had all 4 out in a very involved procedure (all were encapsulated in cysts) -- they gave me prescription painkillers, which helped a lot. With those, though, you have to stay ahead of the pain - don't wait until it hurts to take them.
If you're still in pain after a few days, you may have dry socket, so call the dentist. That is the WORST pain, BUT the good news is that as soon as they pack it, the pain stops.

Yours will probably hurt more and for a longer period of time because of what happened during your extraction. I had them put me out. I got three taken out, and got a dry socket in one of them so I was fine two days later until I got the dry socket.
