Panic attacks

Do you suffer from them?
What are they like?
What do you do for them?
If I know the reason do I just let it go until the thing that is causing them is resolved?

Yes. I suffer from them.
For me, it is a feeling of despair. Totally lose control of everything. The room spins, my heart is thumping away and I have trouble breathing.
i used to be on meds. Thankfully, I haven't had a bad attack in a few months. Meds really helped me. I also use breathing techniques.

I wouldn't just let it go until the problem is resolved. Def see a dr about them.

Re: Panic attacks

Mine would feel like butterflies in my stomach initially. Then I'd just start feeling like my mind was racing and breathing fast.

It would feel like there was something VERY wrong, but I couldn't explain what. OR I'd get this feeling over something that I *knew* didn't warrant full blown panic (like worrying about paying off my student loan YEARS before I graduation).

Re: Panic attacks

I have had them in the past, usually when something very bad was going on in my life.

I would become very overwhelmed, not be able to sleep, feel like I couldn't gain control of whatever situation I was trying to deal with.

I came up with a statement and would repeat it over and over again until my breathing would slow down and I'd start to feel somewhat calmer.

Mine did not resolve themselves until the situation that caused them was resolved.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Chat Icon

Re: Panic attacks

thank you all for sharing.
Tomorrow I get the results of my MRI and my PET scan. Basically, I find out what the chemo and radiation REALLY did in my head and I find out if the cancer spread to anywhere in my body.
I KNOW this is the cause.
Seems liek panic attacks are exactly what I am going thru and that after tomorrow maybe they will subside?

There's a very stong possiblity that they'll subside after tomorrow. Woman, you're under a ton of stress, to say the least. Good thoughts for tomorrow Chat Icon

Re: Panic attacks

I do suffer from them. They range in their severity and symptoms, but for me, the most common manifestations are shortness of breath (for years, I thought my asthma was bad, but it turned out to be panic attacks), feeling like I'm in a fog or far away from everything (kind of hard to explain), and feeling convinved that I'm just going to die any moment.

I usually just occupy myself with something like watching tv or posting on here or some other mindless, yet occupying activity, until it passes. Sometimes I need someone to "talk me down". My dad is usually the best at doing that.

Well, I can see why that would cause a panic attack. I also find that forcing myself to accept that I can't do anything to change whatever I'm panicking over really helps. It takes a lot of willpower to be able to think myself through one, but when I can do it, it works the best out of anythingChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

It's not all that juicy, but gross...I just mopped my kitchen floor. Sounds innocent, right? It was the first time in like 5 weeks. Yes, five weeks of my daughter throwing nasty food on the floor and me just pretending I don't see it because i'm too busy/lazy/defiant to clean itChat Icon I disgust myself!

Re: Panic attacks

Do you suffer from them? Yes, for years now.

What are they like? I feel like I can't breathe, I get very hot, my heart races, and I feel like I'm not in my own body--so weird.

What do you do for them? I try to make myself busy, I will clean the house, go online, go for a walk, call someone to make me feel better.

Gotta love it!
And of course, my mopping story relates to this thread because I was only mopping until a wave of anxiety passedChat Icon
