Re: Calling the pediatrician

Did you meet with them already? If so, I'd just say something about how you met with them x weeks ago, and wanted to just double-check what you needed to do in terms of having them called when your baby is born. That's what I would do I think.

When we met with the pediatrician's office manager, she said you just give the hospital their number (or a copy of their business card if you have one), and they call the pediatrician...then your baby becomes a patient!

ETA: Even if you haven't met with them, I'd say a similar thing. That you'd like them to be your pediatrician, what do you need to do?

No , never met with anyone b.c I was on bed rest till 3 weeks ago and then couldnt get to see anyone in that tiem frame.

So Im basically just calling to pick them if they accept new patients.

Yup, that's exactly what I'd say...ask if they're accepting new patients...say that you're due on x date, and are delivering at x hospital. Is there anything you need to do to set their office up as the pediatrician? Most likely there isn't, they just need to be called by the hospital after you deliver.

Re: Calling the pediatrician

I called up and told them I was due soon and needed a pediatrician. And I asked if they were accepting new patients....and they signed me up with a doctor.
I met with one woman, but she wound up being on vacation the week my daughter was born, so we went in and met with a different doctor who I liked more, so we're sticking with her.
I didn't really feel like I needed to meet with the doctor beforehand, but I did it just in case....not really worth it.

Re: Calling the pediatrician

Thanks for the reminder Donna --

I met with the one we have chosen so I am just going to call and say when I am scheduled for c/s or induction...and to expect me soon afterwards. He doesn't work with the hospital where I am delivering...

Re: Calling the pediatrician

so I just called for the heck of it lol turns out that the recommended pediatrician doesnt take our insurance but they have another one that does... they told me once the baby is born to call and make an appointment, shouldnt be a problem to be seen within couple of days and thats it... nothing to it I guess...

Donna, you don't have to call if he does rounds with the hospital you are delivering at.

I never called the ped I first took Christopher to, I just gave the hospital the name and someone showed up from the office and checked him out.

I hate the phone too...Chat Icon

Thats the issue.

Im delivering at Winthrop which is a journey away.

Meanwhile Good Sam and Southside hospital are right down the road, so I want a close Dr. Who uses those Hospitals.

Not driving all the way to The Winthrop area for the Ped...

AH. Gotca.

I just switched to my old ped, but he is in Port Jeff Station or I would totally recommend him!

Just have the ped in the hospital check him out, no big dealChat Icon

Re: Calling the pediatrician

I am in the same boat -- my ped. isn't affiliated with the hospital I am delivering at. So I just called, and they said OK, just call us when the baby is born and we'll fit you right in. That was all....

Re: Calling the pediatrician

Seriously, that's fine! Or you can say "I am due to give birth next week and I am wondering if you are accepting new infants".

Actually, I don't know if you were told but a pediatrician will come and visit the baby either one or all days you are there with the baby. You can always ask them "can I bring the baby to you" or sometimes they will say "bring the baby in 1 week to see me" and that's that. You can always switch after taht if you are not happy with the doctor.

I know someone that had someone all planned out, and loved the doctor that came in to see the baby (who is my doctor's associate) and loved him so much she switched a few weeks later.

So if you have tons to do, I owuld not worry *too* much about not having a doctor for the baby yet as he/she will be seen by one in the hospital and you can also ask then.

Good luck!!

Re: Calling the pediatrician

I had some recommendations then checked if they participated in my health insurance.

DH called them, asked them if they took new infant patient and if they had free consultation.

They did (they are used to it apparently). We met with one of the ped. He knew the whole routine of what is being asked.

I had a couple of additional questions.

I don't know why I was so freaked out about it. It went really smooth.
