What did they want the money for? Does he work FT?
I understand your concerns for your brothers future care but that is his son. It does sound nervy but what are the circumstances surrounding their request?

That takes some serious CHUTZPA! Does she even realize how expensive this whole ordeal will be for your brother, and that every dime has to be saved for his continuing care? Insane. What did you tell her??????

They asked because his son now has to find a place to live. Both his mother and his grandparents have refused to let the kid live with them. They say they can't handle him and it would be a bad situation. So he has to get his own place. He knew about this 2 months ago that he would have to start saving and looking for a place to live. Now that he has to be out by today he doesn't have a place to go..and he has no money. He works full time and buys himself whatever he wants. Sorry that he was living with his dad and his dad is sick now and will be an inpatient for a while, but my brother was never going back to that apartment. It's not handicap accessible. he knew months ago that he had to find another place to live. He could have found a roommate or another arrangement.
I JUST read your other post about the storage place and it explains a lot more. They are really washing their hands of any responsibility. You poor thing. They should be so happy that you stepped up to take care of your brother and that his son doens't have to worry about his father. Honestly, I must have not read it right because I thought he WAS moving in with them at first that's the reasoning behind my first reply. You have certainly earned your angel wings my dear.

I am paying his last cell phone bill and his verizon bill as well as the gas and electric bills for the past 2 months. I told him that he can look for a place with no debts. I am helping the kid, but I'm not taking the money from my brother.
I offered him my guest room for 2 weeks. I offered him my guest room initially as well when my brother got sick. I thought he could use the family support. He didn't take us up on the offer.

As discomforting it is, it's time your nephew grow up. He is 21 - life is not about taking care of HIM anymore, and an unfortunate series of events now dicate that HE take care of HIS father. No more excuses, no more BS - this kid needs a swift kick in the arse.
This man raised him, changed his diapers, fed him in the middle of the night, clothed him, and put a roof over his head for TWENTY ONE YEARS. I'd say it's time to pay him back a little.

there is another reason not to givr the money to the son - medicais looks at all family gifts - i fiugre it is less than $10,000 but cash gifts are not looked upon well when qualifying for medicaid - need to think in 5 years in the future also - if that is when he may need medicaid -do not know what the future holds regardign medical bills

well, he has been divorced for about 8 years and the kid came to live with him when he was 13. It's a messed up situation. My brother kept a 3 bedroom apartment that he couldn't afford because he was trying to have a place for both kids. He was trying to get custody of his other son. He went broke trying. I got rid of the apartment for many reasons. Also, my brother wasn't taking a dime in rent from his son. He clearly could not afford anything and wouldn't ask his son for some rent money to help out.
It's a bad situation. I can only hope that my brother will have some quality of life and my nephew can find his way.
I would like to get back to my life as well. My husband misses me.
