Down Sydrome Test
hello,
anyone had this test done for their baby? DH and I have no family history so not sure if we should get it tested or not.

What test are you specifically talking about?
Down syndrome is also an "age" factor not just a family history.

i'm 30 and DH is 32. i'm not sure about the name. the dr asked if i want to get it tested, i said yes.

You must be talking about the specific sono you get around week 12. We got it just to get another picture of our baby.

How far along are you?
That will help to determine which test you are talking about?
The 'integrated test' is usually done btwn weeks 11-13. It is a two-part sonogram/blood test to see if their are abnormalities. We opted NOT to have this test.
The 'AFP' test, aka Triple Screen Test, is done by a blood test. This is done I think around 16 weeks (I can't remember exactly) and we decided to have this test, although it does have more false positives then the integrated test.
I am 31 and DH is 32.

We did the CVS test based upon age (I am 36) other factors.
Before we decided we spoke to my specialist, my ob/gyn and a genetic counselor.
Many people do the ultrascreen ( we attempted that as well) baby was not cooperating that day.
If you are confused bty your stats or choices , I would recommend asking your Dr to set you up with a gentic counselor.
A lot of women under 35 opt for the ultrascreen only.
THis decision is really personal, but I found that the gentic couseling was very helpful.

Under 35, I would just opt for the first trimester screening. It's about 85% accurate, and it's non-invasive. If the results concern you, then you could consider more invasive tests (amnio or CVS).
You can also have an AFP blood screening around 16 weeks, and a 20 week anatomy scan. Both of these tests may pick up Down's, but none of them are as accurate as an amnio unfortunately.
The CVS does not pick up neural tube defects, so I opted not to have that test. I may go for an amnio, though I'm still undecided on that.

Most cases of Down Syndrome are NOT hereditary...only a very small percentage of children result from a translocation (1%) which is the inheredited form of Down Syndrome..
Now although the chance of having a baby with Down Syndrome increases with age...most babies with Down Syndrome are born to mothers NOT over 35. This is due in part to the fact that more women have babies under 35 than over. I had my baby with Down Syndrome when I was just 21..so I was 20 years old when I conceived her.
I believe the test you are speaking of is the Ultrascreen. It is a non-invasive test..just a sonogram and a finger prick of blood. While it doesnt rule out all cases of Down Syndrome it does catch most of them...There are other soft markers that they can look for on a sonogram that could be indicators of Down Syndrome as well. Lack of nasal bridge and short femur bone....
I am currently pregnant with my 6th child. My eldest daughter is the one with DS. (she's 13 now) I had NO testing with my twins aside from the AFP. With this pregnancy my DH and I opted for the Ultrascreen and took it from there. We were so happy from the results and what we saw on the screen that we chose not to have any further testing done.
IMO I would have the testing done. If not for anything other than piece of mind and the chance to see your baby...
