This whole story is so tragic.

I was getting teary eyed watching it Chat Icon

I had no idea that she was actually decapitated by the seat belt. That's scary.

It does make me sad for their other children though that their parents no longer have any joy in their lives. The dad even said he no longer is excited about the things his other kids do because Katie isn't there. I think for the sake of their three kids they need to get counseling and really work on bringing some sort of happiness back in their lives. I know it must be really hard though :(

I was thinking the exact same thing...I can't even begin to pretend to understand the pain that a parent must feel when they loose a child. I pray that this family finds a way to enjoy all that they still have...it would be a crime for their other 3 children to go through the rest of thier childhood without joy, without seeing thier parents laugh and smile and without creating new happy memories together as a family.

When the officer told the story of Jennifer sitting on the side of the road holding Kates head I gasped and started sobbing. My DH ran into the den and started watching and was crying too. We just held our daughter a little tighter and gave her extra kisses tonight.

This is what I was thinking too...maybe it will get better as time passes if that is even possible but I just feel horrible for the other kids. The parents both said their lives are over. The grandparents also said they don't want to celebrate holidays anymore...what about the other kids. It's just such a horrible unthinkable situationChat Icon

Re: OMGosh Oprah

I'm so glad this show was made...

I'm glad because people NEED to hear this-- they NEED to hear all the horrible things that happen as a result of someone careless getting behind the wheel drunk.

Everything that they said-- everything that her parents and family described going through is what it is like for EVERY SINGLE PERSON who lost a loved one at the hand of a drunk driver... it's HORRIFIC.

I can't even explain the level of pain and the depth of sadness in words- I really can't.

I just wish people would WAKE UP and stop doing this-- be more responsible-- and give a d a m n about other people on the road. Chat Icon

That being said, this show aired at the perfect time-- I'm doing a walk for MADD in honor of my very special and dear friend Kenny on Sunday...

It is called "Strides for Change" and we organized a team in Kenny's memory (his family, friends and loved ones).

One day- my wish is to live in a world where drunk driving doesn't exist.

Re: OMGosh Oprah

i work where katie went to school. As soon as I saw that video and saw Katie I sobbed. That video showed katie for exactly who she was....a happy, bubbly 8 year old who ALWAYS had a smile on her face. I cant even imagine how they go on.I do hope for the sake of the other children there will once again find joy in their lives. I hope this story will make everyone think the next time they decide to get behind the wheel after drinking.

I was upset also. However, I felt that Oprah was rather blunt with some of the comments she made during the interview. When the mom said that she took Katie to the side of the road, Oprah had to point out,(something along the lines of) "You mean you took her head." She had similar comments throughout the show. I found that unsettling as well. I am hoping that rather than for cheap shock value, Oprah was trying to drive home how horrific this crime was. The image of that poor woman holding her child's head needs to be burned into the brain of every person who might get behind the wheel of their car after having a few.

I was soo upset watching this show.

I can't even imagine what this family is going through but they have 3 other children that are going to be sooo messed up from this. They need to get professional help to try and help them be somewhat happy again for the sake of the other children.

The father was making me a little mad. (Again I have no idea how hard this is but to say you still want to die must be so hard for the other children to hear)Chat Icon

I think Oprah wanted everybody to know how horrible it was and really drive the point home even if it was totally blunt and shocking. IMO, people needed to hear it so they know how AWFUL the accident was.

I took it that it was more to drive home how hoffiric the crime was than for ratings.
People really needed to hear this story. And see what happens to peoples lives when they cause accidents while driving drunk.

I was actually pretty surprised how composed the mother was. She didn't cry once.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I found that to be so offensive. I was telling my mother about this. When Mrs Flynn said Kate and I went to the side of the road and Oprah says and when you say Kate you mean you were holding your daughters head....And her mom brushed that off...she looked offended

I agree Oprah was harsh Chat Icon I think the mother knew exactly what she did (I cant even write it) and thinks about it every second of everyday.

Watching it I had a lump in my throat and I felt like I was going throw up. I couldnt even cry, its that devestating, what these families are going through. Hopefully this will wake people up.

I agree. I mean i think Oprah stated something like 10 diff times "so you were holding your daughters head"..ugh. I know it was to drive the point home, but i was cringing after a while b/c I didn't think it was necessary to keep repeating.

That poor poor family. I felt sick watching it. I hope they can go on and try to salvage some of their life and focus on the happy events to occur for their remaining children, while never forgetting Katie. It's disgusting that had to happen Chat Icon

Re: OMGosh Oprah

The mother just seemed dead to me in all honesty. It looked as if she just goes through each day because she has to - but there was really no emotion, she spoke very matter of factly- and I can only imagine it's because of what she has been through.

Like she said, what can really follow what they have been through?

I watched this this morning and it was just too much. I'm not one who cries a lot, and at some points I was bawling. Just such sad, sad stories (what about the mother who accidentally killed 3 of her 6 children?!).

As for Oprah's comments about the mother holding Katie's head, I think she needed to clarify that because the mother was saying "I was on the side of the road holding Katie ..." which could have been confusing to viewers (esp. if they just tuned in or something). I think Oprah was rather sensitive and not ratings driven.

I agree with those who say that the family really needs some therapy and learn to move on for the sake of the other children. But then again, 2 years is not a long time in the big scheme of things with a tragedy of this magnitude. I hope in 3-4 years from now we see them again with a more progressed sense of grieving.

We watched it and were crying. The story really is unimaginable!!!!

While some of the comments were blunt, I really do think Oprah hit it dead on when she said, no one should be able to watch this and ever think about driving after a drink again!

I really hope that she is right!Chat Icon

Re: OMGosh Oprah

That is so sad. I had no idea that that poor little girls head got severed. Granted I think Oprah was very graphic with her questions but it needs to be heard. I never understood why drunk drivers who kill get such lenient sentences. The Flynn and Rabinowitz family was changed forever.....that deserves life in prison.

I watched and tonight when my DH (after having a few beers but not drunk) said he would drive I said no way!! It has definitely effected me. Even if I think my DH is okay to drive (I don't drink) I will be driving just in case.

Re: OMGosh Oprah

I always think of this story...esp since they live in LI like us, so close to home. What saddened me so much was that they feel they have NOTHING to live for (I am not judging them), yet they have 3 beautiful children who need love, attention, hope, fun, laughter, good times etc. I hope they can work with a therapist to find a way to somehow do the best they can to give their remaining children the lives they deserve. No child should have to live in a shadow their whole life, despite how tragic. They deserve to have just as much as they did from their parents before this horrible insanity happened. But no...I am not judging (I can only imagine how terrible it is to be in that position), just praying they will somehow find a way to smile again for their other children.

Just horrific

Re: OMGosh Oprah

Also how horrible was the other story about the woman who went off the cliff with her 6 kids...and the grandmother who accidentally killed her grandson.

All those people do not deserve such pain, NO ONE does. How terrible. I feel for each one of them. It actually made me think some of my own problems are pretty insignificant compared to the pain in these stories.

Re: OMGosh Oprah

I don't think Oprah as being offensive. She actually at times looked very emotional. I think she kept sayng what she did so everyone really knows the devastation of what happened, and again will hopefully be something a person remembers when they are deciding to get behind the wheel drunk.

Either way this tradgedy has affected 2 familes forever!
