what to do?

I met with the new firm yesterday and they are great. I could really see myself there. They can't wait until my boss finally starts.

They offered me a lateral move $$ wise. They say I'm at the top of the range for my job. Hmm...ok

Since they are downtown and in the worst possible place downtown, this will increase my total commute by about 45 minutes. Maybe a little more on snowy crappy days.

I love my boss. I know I could be happy with her there, but I'm ready for a position change and I know it may take a while for her to plug me into something in the new place. Here I have a lot of contacts and could probably move quicker and make more money sooner.

I know this sounds like a no brainer. It's hard to find someone you really click with at work. I've had my share of horror bosses.

I'm not making a decision without talking to her and she's away this week. I know if I turn it down, she will be really disappointed and so will I. I just think that about 3 hrs total commute is too much! I can barely tolerate what I have now.

Would anyone like to chime in?

Is there any way you could set up a flexile work arrangement [work from home 2 days, in the office for 3 days] that might make the commute a little more bearable and less frequent?

I maybe able to set up a flexible work arrangement but not that much that it would make a big difference.

I think money wise I would make more if I stayed here and found another position. That may be hard too. Breaking out of the admin role into a professional role is never easy, but if she were here it would have been easier.

Now that she is there, she has to prover herself and get to know the players before she is comfortable.

This is tough.

they just called me to see what I'm thinking.

No increase in salary ever again in this role..but they make up for it in total comp...who knows what my bonuses will be?

All I know is they will be more than 2K. So I can expect at least a 2K increase in bonus but not in pay.

I think that's crap.

I told her the commute really blows.

Since your old boss clearly likes you, maybe make them sweat it out for awhile. Maybe in a few months a different position will open up that will offer more $$ and will make the sucky commute more bearable.

I wouldn't make the change. Same money, longer commute, no immediate growth? That's a no brainer for me.

I adore working for him but I just can't wrap myself around a commute like that (I am thinking it would be 4-5 hours a day). I would need at least a 30% increase to give up that much of my life for a job.

It's tough -- you don't find that many great bosses. Good luck!

I would stay at your current firm to pursue another opp. worst case scenario, if it doesn't work out or you change your mind, maybe your soon to be ex boss can bring you over in the future.

that is my story, and I'm sticking to it

I would take my chances with having a boss not as great as your current one and stay where you are. Especially if you feel you can work your way onto a different track quicker where you are now.

Who knows, maybe one day in the future when your fav. boss has made a name for herself she can come and try to recruit you again.

She was really counting on me to come with her and of course I would love to.

She did tell me if it's not for me she would rather have me as a friend for life than have me be miserable working for her.

If it's strictly lateral, and really no extra money, plus a longer commute, can you talk to your former boss and float the idea of changing later? Also, in your current situation with your brother, isn't your current job allowing you to take some personal time to be with him during the week?

JMO, but it sounds like even though you'll still have the great working relationship with your boss, you might be adding some unnecessary stress to your life right now if you switch. Good luck with whatever you decide. Take the time to really think about it, and have confidence in your decision.

You're right. I don't need the added stress of a new job.

Yes, my firm is giving me lots of flexibility. I'm lucky I know. She did say that I can have all the flexibility I need to handle the situation. It can go on for months and she knows that.

The commute plus no more money is killing me.

I will have to speak to her on Monday about it.
