Can someone list all the
pain relief options for labor/delivery and maybe something about them.
(We missed this class in lamaze & are famliar w/ the epidural---obviously) but I just wanted to know what the other options may be & also if the dr. really gives you the option for other things.

I cant really list them all b/c its been a while..I believe you usually go for the epidural now a days. Most other types of pain reliever is going to make you very groggy. I found that you still feel the pain but you are just to out of it to complain. (ie: demoral etc..) Did anyone here have something other than an epi during delivery?

I never heard of any other type other than the Epi when you want drugs.

There is also the spinal if you need immediate relief, like for an emergency c. Here is a link to a good list of options.

You def have other options besides the epi. It's best to be informed before going into labor-def ask your doc about options. If not def ask the labor nurse at the hospital. My nurse gave me options but I already knew I didn't want anything that would wear off or make me groggy.
Epi's are the most popular and is the longest pain relief option in terms of time it lasts.

I had to wait for my epidural since there was another woman who came in at the exact same time as me.
I couldn't bear the contractions anymore and I was looking at another 30-45 minutes before the epi, so they gave me Nubain.
It just made me really sleepy and took some of the edge off, but the contractions were still very much with me.

Epidural is one choice.
Some places can give a walking epidural
then the other options are:
Spinal blocks, medications like Demerol (which can cross the placenta)
The epidural is the one that most people get b.c the other meds like Demerol I think can cross the placenta and they don't really kill the pain as I understand it they more decrease your preception of the pain. They can make you very out of it though and you have to get them I think early on.
I don't think they really do spinal blocks unless you are having a csection.
