To get a "good" crib....
Do I really need to spend $500? Aren't the ones for $300 good also? I just don't want to spend a fortune on this but I will if I have to, safety comes first. Any thoughts? (I need a sliding rail)

You can get a good crib for $150.00.
It just depends on what you are looking for.
- Convertible or not
- Brand...
- Where you buy it

All cribs need to meet safety standards, but the big influx in price the BIGGEST difference between a 600 crib and a 200 crib is the wood. Less expensive cribs are made of pine-very light and easily dented, more expensive cribs are made with hardwood.
I have both cribs-my legacy crib for Gianna-600 bucks, and just bought a 250 crib-both are convertible cribs.
The less expensive crib is already dented and while putting it together DH and my dad chipped it. IT's so much lighter than DD's crib. It's going to serve it's purpose as a crib and toddler bed then i am throwing it out.
Gianna's crib look's like new still and has been through vicious teething, chomping, banging, belt buckles leaning over on it and it doesn't makes a mark. I spent $$$ knowing I will not buy her another set of furniture ever again. Her set will take her to college and beyond.
It just depends how long you plan on using it for.

Thanks Michele. I had a feeling this was the case. I don't know if we will have another child after this one but I guess I should spend the $$$, I want it to be sturdy.

My DH did the "shake test." He actually went up to the cribs & shook them. If they felt sturdy enough, he liked it, if not...it went off the list.

we got our crib for less than 200 at BRU. I could not justify spending a lot of money. This crib is convertible toddler and full, but who knows if we will ever really convert it. Kids will destroy furniture as they get into the toddler years. They take a pen/marker or whatever and write on it and there goes $600.

That was my DH too. It reminded me of the "kicking the tire" test on a new car.
