I agree- i think it was the mid 90's- but MAX 20 years. That being said, everything in the hatch seemed much older than that. Maybe its not the same guy.

Let me also ask a question - Is it possible that Desmond isnt the guy at the beginning of the show in the hatch? The guy at the beginning of the show was showered and clean and Desomond had a scraggly beard and was dirty...I dont think Desmond lives in the hatch, but possibly he was on the plane with jack as one of the survivors - maybe he was sitting in the back of the plane...Maybe he was on his way to the race around the world he was practicing for at the beginning....when he saw Jack in the stadium.
The other thing that is on my mind is that time when the woman who becomes jacks wife is in the hospital...Did you get a glimpse of the guy she had the accident with? He looked like Locke. Is it possible that it was locke, and that he wasnt dead....but he was paralyzed. Maybe when the plane crashed and Locke wiggled his toes and stood up from the wheel chair it had something to do with Desmond....Maybe Desmond has som powers...Maybe he is god or the devil.....I dunno....
And when the blond saw Walt - was he wet or was there some sort of gooey stuff on him?

The man in the hospital has to be Shannons father. I think Desmond does live there with someone else and that he works for the island or the people on it.
Did you notice he threw on a "work" jumper when the Hatch blew? I think whatever he injects himself with is to keep him "immune"to the island....and he quarentenied himself. I think he was a victim of the island many years ago and the man Jack saw maybe Desmonds twin, which is why he didn't recognize Jack.

Wasn't part of the issue in one of his backstories when he was arguing with the airline at the gate desk that he didn't have the proper paperwork for the body to leave the country?

So you think they would have loaded on a coffin without a body? Jack was obviously surprised when he opened it to see no body, so I think it had been in there

Yea, I don't think that it'll take a religious turn either. Also, after seeing that "the others" were human, and that Desmond seemed to be controlling the 'monster', it kinda took away that "supernatural" solution I've thought from the begining.

I just watched this on TIVO and then read this thread. We were curious about Scott saying the guy killed in the car accident (in the hospital scene) looked like Locke so we did the scene in slow motion and it is so clearly Locke!!!

How coud you tell? I also tivo'd it, and all I saw was a bloody head and then the bag in front of his head. Was this in the first scene when they bring his future wife in the hospital?
ETA: The guy's name was Rutherford- like Shannon!
