What's the deal with the suffixes...

such as Jr., II or III?

We want to name our son after my husband, however, we want to give him a middle name which my husband does not have at all. Now, can we still give him a middle name and a suffix Jr., or do we need to name him EXACTLY as my husband in order to attach the suffix?

I tried looking up this information and I came across a birth certificate application which simply states to enter the first, middle, last names and the suffix at the end...it doesn't mention anything at all about the suffix procedures.

Does anybody know anything about this?

You are only a Jr if your name is exactly the same. My brother and dad have the same first name but different middles....my brother is NOT a Jr, nor can he be.

i believe that you give the suffix if the child has the exact same name as the other person. my understanding is that if you are naming your son after his father, then that son is "junior". but if you wanted to name him after, say, your grandfather, then he would be II.

actually, the numbers come in after the fact. For example, if your husband is Joe Bob Smith and then your Son is Joe Bob Smith Jr, and then his son (your son's son--your grandson) woudl be Joe Bob Smith III.

Same exact name. My son is a III and he has the same exact name as DH and his father. I got a little confused b/c my FIL is deceased and therefore only Jr (DH) and III (DS) are alive.

exactly. DH is the "II" even though he's the 4th "first name." His grandmother hated the middle name and changed it when she had my FIL, so instead of being the "IV" my husband is the "II."
