Is something wrong with us?

I don't know if I should feel guilty, like there is something wrong or is this normal.

I am 10 weeks PG and we are just not excited about it at allChat Icon We planned this PG, and we got PG from the first time and we are kinda still walking around in a daze. I thought it would change at our 8 week appt when we saw the heart beating, but it didn't. It doesn't feel real and we are not excited. We don't even talk about it - just try to ignore it.

I went maternity shopping and spent a whopping $250 on few shorts and an outfit and I thought that would help but it didn't.

Is this normal?

Its not that you are not excited. Its that you are still in that I cant believe it phase. It will pass. I am sure deep down you are really happy about having a baby.

As your stomach grows so will your excitement. Don't worry, you're fine. Except for knowing you're pregnant not much has changed for you yet. It will. Time goes by so quickly! Cliche' but true!

Maybe it just hasnt set in yet. Once you start to show and people notice it will become more realistic. There is still so much to look forward too. Since you planned this PG I am sure deep down you really are excited. Maybe you are just more nervous now because of the reality behind it.

Re: Is something wrong with us?

We got pg the first time too and it was a shocker - I honestly did NOT think it would happen that quickly. It took some getting used to for sure! That plus worrying whether everything was going to be OK with the baby, with "us" - it's a lot to think about all at once. Give yourselves some time to adjust to the idea Chat Icon

I'm 10 wks. too, and most of the time, I'm not very excited about it either. I read my pregnancy books, mainly to know what to expect and what to do/not to do, but I don't feel all warm and fuzzy over the photos in them.

My stomach is getting bigger, but I think it's mostly fat and bloat, so that doesn't excite me either.

To be honest, my first reaction when I saw my BFP was "What did we do," and we had been trying for awhile, started infertitlity testing, etc.

I think this is all a shock somehow, even if you plan for it. I do hope I'll start to feel warmer towards the baby soon. Right now, the baby seems like some alien creature that's making me burp and fart too much.

Re: Is something wrong with us?

I had terrible anxiety after getting my BFP (we planned it too- and got it on the first try). I had all these feelings of indifference and worried that we'd made a mistake. I was totally NOT excited.

Once I started really "showing" and ESPECIALLY once we knew we were having a girl and feeling her move for the first time the excitement set in.

I look back at my inital trepidation and laugh now....

I think it's probably because the stage of pregnancy you are in is a little less than rewarding, morning sickness, exhaustion, not showing yet, etc. I think the excitement will kick in soon enough and you will be overjoyed. I'm sure your hormones are just messing with you. It's going to be fine.

We were exactly the same way and similar to you it was planned but got PG the first try. As someone else said, I think it was the shock of it. Now we're excited (although it still all seems a bit surreal) so I'm sure you'll get there too. It's a HUGE life change so it's normal to be apprehensive, you know?

Re: Is something wrong with us?

aww, I think what you are feeling is normal. Its hard to be excited about something when you can't see or feel it. Especially if you are feeling yucky!! You will see, when things start to take shape, and you start to feel movement, it is hard to not be excited!! Hang in there and try not to worry! And congratulations!

hmmm..apparently its very normal, but I am too excited, sometimes I feel like I shouldnt be as excited yet as I am.....I think you will be excited once everyone starts noticing and all....you are baking a human in you, if its not exciting, its at least AMAZING!!!!

Re: Is something wrong with us?

Took me a while for it to set in...Maybe 12 weeks or so. I was in shock...it had taken us 2 years and IVF to get PG though.

I think its normal and Dont let yourself think too much about it.. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Is something wrong with us?

There were days in the beginning where I practically forgot I was pregnant. Now that I am showing and feeling the baby move it is so much more real and we are getting excited.

There is nothing at all wrong with you. Enjoy the calm normalcy of "coupledom" for as long as you can.

Re: Is something wrong with us?

I was in shock when I found out I was PG - it wasnt planned, but I always wanted a baby...

But, I wasnt happy at 1st. There were more things I wanted to do for may career, and financially we were not in a position to have a baby...

but, things changed as the months went on - we realized this was a blessing, and we made sure we prepared ourselves the best we could - and - honestly - once you see your baby, your feelings will change!!! Chat Icon

Re: Is something wrong with us?

Totally normal! It's a huge thing to get used to, and possibly you're not feeling that great physically either. It took me a few weeks to get used to the idea and feel something other than worried and freaked out. Just keep talking to your DH and your friends and family and everyone here. Chat Icon

Re: Is something wrong with us?

I am with you, I am 8 weeks and although I am happy I cant say I am as excited as I thought I would be.
I think with me part of it is that no one knows yet. So its just me and DH and he's so preoccupied with other stuff the only conversation we have about it, focuses on me being sick. Another part for me is I feel like I know so many people whose first pregnancies didnt stick that I am not letting myself get too attached to this idea yet, just in case.
Plus its really scary. This is something I have wanted forever (yet we werent yet trying) and now that its here I am nervous about the type of parent I will be, how I will balance the other aspects of my life with a baby, how my non-parent friends will react, how my DH will react as he tends to worry about everything too much, where we are going to put the furniture that is currently in the will be nursery. The list goes on. I actually told DH the other day that I wont make a good parent because I forgot to feed the dog. (I remember like 2 hours later than normal)
Its just overwhelming in the beginning, I think we need to be easier on ourselves. We have 9 months for hte excitement to build and as the other ladies said I am sure once we are feeling better, and people notice without us telling them (i am constantly makign excuses to people on why I dont feel well or why I am tired because I dont want them to know yet) and we feel the baby the excitement will be there more than we ever anticipated.

Sorry this is so long!!

Yes! This was us for a while...I really had strong moments where I felt like: big deal.Chat Icon That in no way reflects on me, I was simply still in disbelief it was all happening. Now, I am ecstatic. One of the things that helped me the most was buying the crib and putting it up.Chat Icon
