spinoff about real estate lawyers
What is the average price for a real estate lawyer for contract/closing, and when should you call him/her? Immediately after your offer is accepted or later on in the process?

Our lawyer I had a rate between 850-950.
We called ours when we placed the offer in hopes that it would be accepted. Once accepted, we let him know and we got the ball rolling.

Has anyone ever used the teacher's union lawyer? Is this a free service? Are their lawyers any good?

They can run anywhere from $900 to $1500 depending on who you hire--that should include everything from contract to closing. If you are looking at houses you should also look for a lawyer too because once you have an accepted offer and the inspection is done the first thing the realtor will ask you is your attorney's information so that the seller's attorney can forward them the contracts. If you need a recommendation FM, he charges $950 I think.

we had someone who was recommended to us, so we called him after we made the offer...just to let him know, then called him back to retain his services when our offer was accepted
