If you printed some of the internet articles about "old" car seats would be believe you more?
I think it can be a potentially dangerous situation that I would stand my ground on. Sorry that she made you feel that way - but I think you are doing the right thing! 
I was going to suggest the same thing...or tell her it was recalled

I agree with you! If it was like a year old or something, I would tell her fine, but 7 years? a lot can change with a carseat in that time (safty reasons) like you said.

Nope, I completely agree with you. I had this same debate/argument with my own mother when she tried to convince me to use my old 30+ year old crib with Alex.
I printed out all the articles on the web warning against using old products - she quieted down quickly after that

actually 2 sales people at babies r us told me that you should never reuse a car seat that is older than 5 yrs.

You are TOTALLY right !! Try to explain the safety issues, if they don't get it, oh well. I am sick of sounding so "overprotective" to the family, when I know I am not.
Your the mommy...they had they're turn to raise children, it is our turn now. Sorry to sound so harsh, but I have beem going through this stuff myself !

I wouldnt let my child in a car seat that was 7 years old. The safety harness alone has changed a lot in the last 7 years. Could you maybe print out info for your mom and show it to her? Give her backup evidence to prove your not a "basketcase"
