Squatting

So I have read that squatting helps get the baby into the birth canal. Does this mean actual squats. Like stand up, go down, stand up again and so on, or should you just squat for as long as you can on the floor? Strange question, I know!

Re: Squatting

Yes, they told us this at lamaze the other night. I got the impression it was just the squatting down, not actual squats. They also said the ball helps during labor, esp. if baby is facing the wrong way (face front, not back)

Re: Squatting

do yo mean at the end of the pregnancy or during labor?

there def are "exercises" that you can do towards the end of pregnancy to help you be more flexible and to help you have a less "traumatic" experience.

there are also "birthing stools" which are specifically designed for the mother-to-be to squat and deliver the baby that way... using gravity to help things along.

laying down for labor is actually a very new "phenomenon" which was introduced by the british upper-class because they felt that squatting was "not proper"

Right , I was wondering did she ( The O/P) mean before labor ( at the end of the PG) or DURING labor?

Re: Squatting

I will be squatting before and during labor. This was a BIG technique in our Bradley Classes.... even during a contraction, even giving birth! That's how most woman back in the day gave birth.. in a squat.

I learned a lot about the squatting method through the Prenatal Yoga Tapes--its true, squatting is more conducive to giving birth---what the hell does laying down do except make it harder?

Re: Squatting

When I watched the videos yesterday on Babycenter.com they showed women squatting during labor. They also used the ball alot. I wonder if most hospitals have the ball nowadays?

I was talking about before labor...even though I have also heard to do it during labor. It is supposed to help prepare your body...its in my bradley books as well....but I am not sure if I should just squat down...or do numerous squats!

Re: Squatting

Yes - that was a big thing in our Bradley classes - I squatted all thru my 3rd tri, but it didn't help to get him lower though...

its also supposed to be good to squat when you are having contractions....
