Just make sure not to get it too soon. You need to be at least 3.5 cm dilated

That varies from practice to practice.

My doctors will give you one at any point. They told me the "window" for an epidural is a myth.

Re: Anyone else afraid of having an Epidural?

I was TERRIFIED of getting an epidural. If you read any of my past posts I swore I wouldnt get one. Well, after 50 hrs of labor I broke down. It helped me to get some sleep which I needed to push or I dont think I would have made it. I am a hypochondriac and asked the anesthisiologist 101 questions. The epidural does not go directly into your spine, it goes in the space next to your spine. The medication is just like any other drug they can give you and will wear off. It CANNOT be permanent. The dr. told me the side effects and I had to sign something and being permanently numb and paralyzed was not even one of the possible side effects.

See how you do during labor. You may need it if it is a long hard labor, you may not if it is quick.

I am so glad I have you all to talk to. I was discussing this with my DH last night. With the sciatica I have now, if this is any sign of what's to come..I will defenitely have the epi. My first child wasn't a piece of cake..and seeing as how it will be 16 years later...I just may be in for a long on again and I know I won't be able to tolerate that pain. I believe I am going to suffer from back labor as well..which is even more painful..from what I'm hearing.

I guess it comes with wanting to have a girl?? What was that saying again... "Thank Heaven..for Little Chat Icon " LOL!

i had horrible sciatica and back labor and the epidural was the greatest! it doesn't just help for the contractions, it will take away the back pain too. before i got the epidural i was in so much back pain i couldn't rest or be comfortable. once i got the epidural my back felt so much better and i was able to rest and even get some sleep.

I'd get an epidural again in a heartbeat, although that being said, I had it when I was only 1cm and about 12 hours later I was still only 1cm. I was induced though, so they gave it to me early.

When I wound up having a c-section the epidural wasn't enough, I still had areas where I could feel a bit.

I'm looking forward to getting the epidural when the pain becomes excruciating. I held out pretty long without the epidural when I had my DS. Then the doctors had to refill it like 3x because I was in so much pain that I was crying and I have a pretty high tolerance for pain.

Re: Anyone else afraid of having an Epidural?

I am TERRIFIED of needles... I asked one of my Dr's the other day if it is true that some people got paralyzed and he told me No, that people are just scaring me. He said you cannot get paralyzed.. Is this true or is he just making me feel better?
