NT and False Pos?

Last night I went for my NT test. Today I get a phone call from my doctor telling me that the baby's neck measured a little thicker than they like to see. Still awaiting the results of the bloodtest. Anyway, he wants me to go for an amnio and fetal echocardiogram. Need I say that I was extremely upset with this news. Trying, although its so hard, to stay positive. Anyone have any experience w. false positives? Probably wishful thinking but the sonographer kept saying last night that the baby was being uncooperative. Could it just be that she got poor images?

I would not get too upset yet - which is easier said than done I know - wait until you get your blood work and know some more. I have had both an amnio and a fetal echo so if you decide to consider either or both procedures let me know.

There are always false positives with these tests - so I wouldn't get too upset until you have more information.

Re: NT and False Pos?

My experience was similair.

Our neck measurement was borderline high.

my bloodwork came back all within normal limits but the Dr. wanted us to have the fetal echo anyway.

We did and it was 100% fine.

I know the fear, but its often ok...its just a guess measurement and can mean nothing....I believe it meant nothing and it turned out ok.

Im sure everything is going to be fine..

In my opinion I feel the Dr is being a little premature in recommending the amnio and Fetal Echo prior to the results of the blood work...

I would possilbly call the doctor and with the full Ultrascreen Results in hand make an appointment with a Genetic Counselor.

As far as the baby being "uncooperative" I would feel that that is a definite possibility..was this a tech that performed the NT or was it a Dr?....I have nothing wrong with most technicians BUT over the past 13 years I have had DOZENS of sonos and some of the techs have been COMPLETE IDIOTS!!!!!!!

Please keep us posted...

Re: NT and False Pos?

My obgyn said all 3 of his kids came back abnormal and they all turned out just fine!!...this is part of the reason I did the test, because I knew that even if it came back abnormal, it was likely that it was false. Don't worry! Chat Icon

It was an u/s tech. who peformed the sono. First she scanned over my tummy and said, baby is being uncooperative. Then, she did transvagival, which I don't know if its just part of the test. Then, baby to tummy. She was poking around on my tummy and tilted me back in the chair I guess to get baby to move.

Re: NT and False Pos?

My baby was being uncooperative for this test also, but I think she got one good pic. She checked with the doc to make sure, but I am still awaiting results. I hope all works out okay for your little one. Try to think positive, I know its hard.......but these tests do get a lot of false positives!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: NT and False Pos?

My SIL rec'd a false positive on the AFP. My Dr was reassuring to me in stating that they use the results of the NT sono, bloodwork, AFP and Level 2 sono to determine a person's risk level of Downs &/or Trisomy.

Re: NT and False Pos?

This is my reasoning behind a "false positive"...

Baby needs to be exactly on its side to get the most accurate measurement..if its turned towards the tech the measurement will be less and if the baby turns away the measurement will be more..GOD I hope this makes sense!! So if you measurement is close to the 2.5 normal margin any way and then the baby turns away oh so slightly then BAM your #s are over RIGHT???

TO me it sounds like the tech didnt do a very good job..Hopefully you will get the full results back soon...

Keep us informed you know we'll all be thinking about you.

Re: NT and False Pos?

i know that this is so much easier said than done, but please try to keep as calm as possible. there is a LARGE false positive rate for this test - that's why it's a "screening" test and not a "diagnostic" test. also, the official results of the test are derived from BOTH the NT measurement AND the blood values together - so you don't have all the information you need yet.
