I say "Thanks!" 
She says "It humanizes you."

maybe the two statements were separate? or that creating a human is a beautiful thing? I think most people don't think when they talk, but I don't think that they mean to be mean.

Definitely back-handed!!! Do you work in a Department that deals with people in difficult situations?
Im in HR and could definitely see a statement like that being made due to the daily dealings I have...
