friggin hole in my tooth

I swear. I had a chip behind my front tooth from my tongue ring. (I took it out years ago but the damage was done.) The filling fell out & now there is a HOLE THROUGH MY FRIGGIN TOOTH! The Dr wants to do a root canal...Um hello I am PG..I don't think so!

What the heck can I do?

If it doesn't hurt maybe they can put a temporary filliing it

I read somewhere that local anesthesia is ok while preggo, however, exrays may not be

You can get a RCT while pregnant. You just have to check with you OB about what anesthetic the dentist should use. If the doctor is suggesting a RCT more than likely the whole is deep enough where they can't fill it. They will have to take an xray of the tooth so have them double lead apron you.

See I am not sure...it is literally going from the front of my tooth to the back, in the middle of my tooth.. It is not near my gum at all... Since the DDS did not do an x-ray, how would he know if I needed a Root Canal?

I'm guessing he thought the damage was great enough(clinically) that it couldn't be restored without needing a RCT?? He could have taken an xray if he lead aproned you. We only insist on xrays(during pregnancy) when there is a problem. I can't really give you an answer on what to do since I can't see the tooth. Sounds like you can't leave it the way it is though.

No I definitely cannot. I am wondering if he can patch it until after the baby & then do the root canal. I just hate taking the chance. ( I am such a nervous person throughout this PG anyway )

Explain the situation to your doctor and tell him you prefer to wait until after birth. I hope he can temporarily fill it for you but if not the RCT is completely safe to have. If you need another opinion I might be able to help you out with names of doctors :) Good Luck

DH just called from the dentist with the same problem!!!

he needs a root canal and a cap on the tooth.... with 7 weeks before i got out on leave.... bam $700 dentist bill!!!

it sucks.... but he wont be in pain anymore... and he was in pain!!

My teeth are such a mess right now. Once this baby comes out, I am headed to the dentist!

First, i broke my tooth at the end of july, they put something in temporarily, but I am so sick of food getting stuck in in that area of my gums that sometimes takes days to get out.
Then, in december, i broke my back bottom tooth on a milk dud and have a hole in that tooth also

My SIL had to have a root canal while pregnant. She was in her third trimester and I believe she even took a small dose of tylenol 3.

I feel for you. I have to get a route canal, but I'm trying to hold off as much as I can because I'm only 15 weeks. I am in so much pain though. I'd ask about a temp filling first. They tried that with me, but it's not working. Most dentists will do anything to help a pregnant woman.

Yikes I don't have any advice, but I'm sorry you're going through this, it DOES NOT sound fun at all!!

I have a big cavity that we found out 2 days before getting my BFP because I had such a bad toothache for 2 days.

I have to remove the wisdom tooth to get to the cavity on the next tooth.

They gave me antibiotic and told me to hang on as long as possible, not to eat on that side, etc... and see what happen in 2nd trimester.

I asked the OB since I am now in the 2nd trimester.... again they told to try to hang on unless I HAVE TO GO.

I had tons of dental work while I was pregnant both times. No x-rays, but I did have novacaine, but without the Epinephrine (per my OB). I had some implant work, a wisdom tooth removed and other work beside my cleaning. It is perfectly safe. Both my dentist and OB agreed that if left untreated, and an infection resulted, it would be harder to treat while pregnant than just getting the work fixed then.
