old cribs...
So my IL's saved DH's crib from when he was a baby - this crib is 36 years old. They want us to use it...I would think it's not up to today's safety's standards. Although I do think it would be nice to use a crib that was in the family. Does anyone else have an old crib?

I had that option too but there are now regulations on spacing between posts, drop down sides, etc.....
It is not recommended to get a crib older than 5 years.

From everything I read, cribs manufacturered before 1992 (I'm pretty sure that was the year... the lastest mid 90's) should NOT be used. Apparently around that time a complete overhaul of safety requirements was put into place... slats being no more than 2 1/2 inches apart, etc.

One of the paragraphs says the following:
Today's safety regulations are so specific (like the allowable with for spindles) that you can't just judge a crib's safety with a cursory examination. Cribs made before the 1970's might contain lead paint, which is difficult to detect unless you get the crib tested. Another problem is if the brand name is rubbed off, it will be hard to tell if the crib has been involved in a recall. Obtaining replacenment parts is also difficult for a no-name crib. Another impotant point: in 1999 new rules for cribs went into effect that that mandated slat attachement strength (in the 1990's, several crib models were recalled because the slats fell out).

As meaningful as it is- I'd have to go with the other posters and say NO. The old adage, "it was good enough for our kids...." does NOT apply here.

Agree! It's a wonderful sentiment, and in actuality, it's probably better made (better materials, etc.) than a lot of today's cribs, but there were no safety regulations back then. The crib slats may be too wide, etc. I'd pass on it definitely!

Sorry but I agree too. And MIL has DHs old crib. It literally looks homemade compared to the one we ordered. The standards are completely different & also when we measures (jsut to humor) the mattress would have been too small & would have caused a gap.
