Re: Anyone moving out of state?

I would like to. Not the SE - I'm thinking more West Coast or MD has peaked my interest. However, DH is doing very well at his job and enjoys it (which is the most important part), so here we stay until something changes.

good luck to all who are moving

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

We're moving to VA - building a house there now. My family is there and DH has some family there + family in SC.

I agree with Beth - a house in a gated community with a club house, pool, tennis court and golf course is actually affordable in VA Chat Icon

it is so hard for us not to think about moving down south, especially after a few recent trips that we have taken. We love the Cary/Raleigh area! I actually would like to move there and have one of those gorgeous houses we saw back in September!!!!!!! Chat Icon

I don't doubt that. RTP has TONS and TONS of companies, and more are moving to the area.

at first I was looking at $500K houses in Atlanta- but they were 4000- 5000 square feet ( too big for 2 people)- so we had to lower the amount we want to spend

for $375K I can have a brand new house on a lake - with every upgrade known to man - still 5 bedrooms, media room, everything! (it would be a 2 million dollar house here)

our mortgage payment- will be the same as the rent on our 1 bedroom apartment Chat Icon

all I need to do is find a job!

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

we moved to NC last June. DH still isn't fully settled where he works now, we are waiting to see if an internal offer comes through somewhere else before we buy.

Currently we rent, I love where I live. I put the baby in the stroller everyday and go store to store, to the park, to the grocery store, all without ever getting in my car. Its definately not "the sticks" like I had imagined. We had a smooth move, DH found work right away.

I feel like we have created a great foundation for a strong network down here as well through LIF. I am awaiting invites to BBQs this summer from a few of themChat Icon

and yes Nicole, I have no problem driving to High PtChat Icon

Reality Check - Unless you transfer from up here, you aren't making near the money you make in NY - so it becomes a moot point.

that's not necessarily true depending on what you do

my DH can do the same thing and pay less in taxes

and there are a few major players in my industry down there

the idea that you make more in NY is a myth

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

Well, I know of half a dozen couples who moved down there and the only ones who stayed and bought homes (especially in the $300K range) are the two who transferred up here.
The other four have either come back or are struggling down there.

ok- I have no family here- I have nothing keeping me - we want to give it a shot- if we come back or move some where else so be it

we have no kids and nothing keeping us in NY-plenty of people leave NY and do very well and are happy

My DH could either open a branch of his current company or become a wholesale loan rep- and I work in the home furnishings industry- which like I said has a few major players in the area

if it works out great, if not- so be it- I would rather give it a shot then not

either way- I would rather do it now- then never

NY will always be here

Re: Anyone moving out of state?

I'm not arguing if you should or shouldn't come back. I was just pointing out that buying a house for $400k down south is not exactly like buying one here for the same kind of $$$$. It's not that easy to make the same amount of money there as it is here.

You were the one who said that you just had to find a job down there.

thanks- I haven't even started to look yet- we haven't even gone down to see if we like it yet- we just decided this last weekend after going back and forth over where we want to live for months/years even

to be honest- I don't contribute to the household expenses other then food and cable- so my husband would pay the mortage just as he pays the rent now- and being that he could even keep working at his current job- it's not an issue

my job only pays for my car and any extras- and since I think I could at least keep my salary - I am not concerned

ETA- in order to stay in NY and make my current job work I would need to buy a house in the most expensive areas -north shore of nass. or south of 287 in westchester for my DH to also be able to commute to work fairly- so we would rather head down south that spend that kind of money on a house we would never love and maybe never be able to fix up the way we like

our mortgage payment and taxes would be 3 times our rent and we just don't want to do it- if my Mom was alive and my Dad, Sister and brother lived here that would be different- but they are not- so why should I stay

we really go back and forth with the idea. DH has alot of job security here, we have great benefits, etc.... Also, i've researched the salary changes in certain areas and it is SIGNIFICANT... almost to the point that it wouldnt be worth it... in essence, we're actually comfortable here, but we could possibley end up struggling down there, so it doesn't seem very logical for us.

But, my issue is that i'm just not a fan of LI, or the way of life here... so that makes me want to leave. yeah, the cost of living is annoying, i'm compensated well enough... that most likely wouldn't be the case if we moved. Still, we toss around the idea.

Can anyone tell me how far the Cary area is from the coast? Or what areas near the coast are comparable?

Also - how far is the drive from LI?

Thanks!

I want to say 4 hours from the coast and about 10 1/2 hours from LI.

Which was kind of my point. There are comparable jobs, the salaries just aren't comparable.
