Utilities

DH and I are trying to figure out approximately how much utilities would be per month.

Can anyone possibly ballpark it for us?

The house had gas heat, if that makes a difference.

It's a 2-story

Not entirely huge - 2 BR, 1 bath

We have oil and we pay $180/month

We haven't gotten an electric bill yet, but we were told to estimate btw $150-200/month

Water is blled about $25/month, although the town bills you on a qaurter.

Oil - 250 average per month in winter
Electric - 110 per month
Gas - 40 per month
Water - 20 per month
Alarm - 33 per month
Cable/internet/phone - 140 per month

I think that's it?

This is for a relatively small 3 bedroom 1.5bath house in Nassau County. Water is higher in the summer when we have the sprinklers on.

of course it all varies, but we have never paid more than $200 in gas or electricity (for heat in the winter or A/C in the summer) and it is usually under $150.

water for us is very cheap - in the summer it gets to $20-30 a month, but otherwise it's less than $5 a month for our town

It can completely vary even for the same size house.

For example, your consumption of oil can vary based upon how old your burner is, how drafty/old your windows are, your insulation, etc. In the house we bought the burner was burning oil so inefficiently we decided to replace it right away and in one year saved well over one thousands dollars.

Same for electricity, especially AC. Window units cost more to run and it is more expensive to keep a southern exposure house cool, especially if there are few trees shading the house and/or a second floor because units must work harder on second, third, etc. floors.

Even water can vary from town to town. The district that I teach in pays several times more for water than my father does. They are both in Nassau county.

It's best to ask the sellers for copies of their utility bills.

It really can depend--we just got a new boiler which will help our gas bill a little but unfortunately our house is old and not insallated properly and the windows are original so until those are replaced it is still drafty in our house and we keep the heat on higher because of that. Our gas bills for this winter have been crazy--hopefully with the new boiler it will help but our electric bill was $120s in the summer and has been $65-$85 in the winter. Our gas bill (we have gas heat, stove & dryer) has been in the $300s for the past 2 months.

We are on a budget for $89 a month.

our electric is approx $100 p/month. We have a pretty big house & we have well water so no water bill but electric runs our water pump.
Our oil bill has been MUCH better this season, we have only filled up twice since November. Its approx $300 with todays prices. Last year I was filling up every 4 weeks & the prices were higher.

Our townhouse was 2 BRs & smaller. Our gas was $120 budget billing & Lipa was $80 budget billing.

You will also want to take into account the hot tub and high ceilings. Those two things will take up more energy...

vaulted ceilings are TERRIBLE for energy efficiency. We had them in our townhouse & we have them again now. I don't like them, all the heat is way up there when it should be down low by my chair

We have gas too, a hot tub, cathedral ceilings, central Air in summer, forced hot air in winter

ranch style w/ full finished bsmt

Approx Cost
LIPA + Keyspan = $300-$350 / month
