Does anyone else have a hard time digesting this? I have been trying it per the nutritionist since I have gestational diabetes but I find it does not agree with me at all. Just wondering if it's common or not and if any of the other artificial sweeteners are better.

My OBGYN told me to stay away from all sweetners including Splenda. I would just avoid sugar all together if you GD.

I agree. I don't think there have been enough studies done on Splenda during pregnancy.

Can you try a little brown sugar? It tastes great, I put some in my oatmeal in the morning. I took myself off Splenda when we were TTC.

Re: Splenda

My doc said it was the only one that was ok.
He even had an article/Study on it stating it was ok to have during pregnancy.

I only use it in coffee that I still have and enjoy one a day.

Enjoy and in moderation!

Re: Splenda

My OBGYN also told me to stay away from artificial sweetners. I actually don't include them in my diet anyway b/c I think they do way more harm than good. However, if you are looking for a sweetner that is low in sugar and healthy I recommend:

SweetLeaf Stevia Plus

It's 0 calories and 100% natural. You can actually get it at an organic store...I know Whole Foods has it. It's actually very high in fiber too.

Here's a website I found that talks about it:
http://www.steviasmart.com/wiheswlestpr.html

It was actually recommended to me by a friend who cannot have sugar or artifical sweetners for different reasons. She's been working closely with a nutrionist who recommended it to her.

Same here. I have substituted a lot of products with Splenda included in it. My yogurt, ice cream, lemonade, and I use it in my tea.

Re: Splenda

Really interesting article I found....

http://www.womentowomen.com/nutritionandweightloss/splenda.asp

Honestly, there were an overwhelming amount of articles discussing this, but I found this one to be the least dramatic and all about just presenting the facts.

I don't want anyone to freak out, but just remember that we can't always rely on our Dr.'s to give us the "correct" information. They are humans, just like us and we all know, we make mistakes. Basically, just research before taking what they say as "the" answer.

Interesting article - thank you for sharing. I think that each person has to make their own decision. I have been using Splenda for a while and have had no problems with it. I think that if we got right down to it - we could argue the safety of anything and everything. We can only take the information - such as in these articles - with a grain of salt because in reality many of these things have agenda's and sponsors behind them swaying the information presented.

Not looking to argue - just wanted to share my view. Each person has to stay within their comfort zone - and as with all things - moderation is key. I don't plan on discontinuing my use of splenda.

Re: Splenda

I completely agree...we really do need to do what will keep us in our comfort zone. And yes, we definitely can find something wrong with anything and everything nowadays. I just want us all to make informed decisons.

This is an article that mentions pregnancy and sweetners - it talks about Stevia.

http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/artificialsweetner.htm

Keep in mind Splenda is recommended for those with GD and Diabetes - so their dietary recommendations might be different from someone without that issue.

Re: Splenda

Thanks for all the input, girls. I normally have no use for artificial sweeteners because I would rather use something natural but, unfortunately, the GD prevents me from doing so now. I'm pretty sure Splenda doesn't cross the placenta so I'm not worried about that aspect, but it doesn't agree with me and I think I need to find something else. I was relieved to see I am not the only one who had an "unpleasant reaction" to the artificial sweeteners.

Re: Splenda

very interesting..... thanks for the article!! Yeah, I'm well aware of that.... The person who recommended me Stevia was an unpregnant woman who had those medical issues and also was not comfortable taking Spenda and was working with a nutrionist for alternative options.

Re: Splenda

What about those apple sweetners? It comes in packets in more like a honey consistency? Does anyone know what I'm talking about? I've seen it a few times and more so in Europe... It's supposedy 100% sugar made from apple juice??? I don't know too much about it, but it might be worth it to look into.....
