Re: receiving blanket/blanket vs swaddling blanket
I never really wrapped my first up that much [mainly b/c she was born in May and was not small enough for swaddling by the cold months]. ..but I saw the ones that encase their arms and it scared me! I think mainly b/c it's pushed as a sleeping blanket and I don't like the idea of confining a baby while it sleeps.
So I suppose my vote is the blanket.

Re: receiving blanket/blanket vs swaddling blanket
Honestly, I would get 1 or 2 recieving blankets, then wait to see if your baby likes to be swaddled.
DD HATED being swaddled and I hardly ever used the receiving blankets. I think i used mine maybe 3 times. I have like 6 blankets taking up precious space in her dresser along with a swaddle me.

Sarah hated being swaddled, she burst out even in the hosptial when the nurses did it. I just put the miracle blanket I got for her aside until the next one.
Andy on the other hand LOVED it. It was much easier to swaddle with the miracle blanket than with a recieving blanket.

Re: receiving blanket/blanket vs swaddling blanket
We went to a newborn class where the nurse showed us how to swaddle with a receiving blanket. I don't think there's any comparison- both the regular blanket and the special swaddle blanket both look pretty easy. We already have both kinds of blankets- we have the fleece Swaddle Me blankets, which we'll probably only use till it gets warmer. The receiving blankets are less heavy.

Re: receiving blanket/blanket vs swaddling blanket
DS has always been able to kick out of a recieving blanket no matter how tight it is, so we use the Swaddle Me pouches. He's 3.5 months old and still sleeps swaddled.

I liked the receiving blankets better because they were bigger
