That makes me want to VOMIT. We are looking at $500,000 and we can't get anything decent...UGH! Although, we are going to look at 2 really nice homes tonight, I think one of them might be "the one"...Wish me luck everyone!

They are nice homes you can't deny that. But the values of the homes will never appreciate like they do in New York or in certain other states, like CA.

that's not necessarily true. certain parts of the country have appreciated A LOT in the past few years. who's to say that won’t happen in TX?

it could - but with all the new home building, it keeps prices of lived in homes down.

my sister paid $145 in 2003 for her colonial in Va - and she said houses in the neighborhood sell for maybe $185 - due to all the new construction, no one wants the houses built in the 70s.

Id take $40K in four years though.

gorgeous and slightly depressing. Maybe after we sell our house in NY (in a decade or so - haha) we can buy one straight out in TX

Right now there is a lot of land in Texas to build on. Supply and demand. There is hardly any room to build on here so appreciation values continue to rise and rise. They values will go up, but I don't see it going up at the rate they do in NY.

property will appreciate anywhere you go - with inflation and other factors its inevitable (unless there is some kind of natural disaster or breakdown in a place's economy) - but the rate homes have appreciated here is not common at all and you won't find that in places where the demand is lower and supply is higher. Thats just the way it is.

love the judgements once again- that's why I asked where she was looking- I have a small area that will work for both me and my husband- the north shore of Nassau county (great neck, manhasset, the list goes on and on)

which is why the $600K budget is very hard- most houses are at least $800K plus

I need to be able to drive to CT and not spend 2 hours in the car- and my DH wants to be close to his friends who all live in suffolk

$500K wouldn't get me a house in the areas I am looking in- and at $600K it's depressing when I compare that fab house in westchester I want for $590K

I was always under the impression that westchester was as if, if not more $$ than LI.

I don't agree with that having looked in both places- but the 2 places I am comparing are not like comparing apples to apples- southern westchester south of 287 is the expensive part

North Shore Nassau county and north western westchester are not the same

the house I love in westchester is in croton on hudson, 5 bedroom, full finished basement with media room, 3 bathroom, steam room, floating fire palce- all updated with beach rights and a pool for $590K

try and find all that for less then $1M in Nassau

here's the house- in westchester

I didn't find that to be true at all- except when looking south of 287- scarsdale, larchmount

it's more expensive then suffolk- but not all parts of Nass. county- it's comparable

I wasn't disagreeing with you....it was more of a statement/question. I see what you are saying about comparing apples to apples.

yeah, TX is crazy cheap. They are well BELOW the nat. average for home prices. I was watching house hunters last night and they were in Fort Worth buying a gorgeous house for under 200K.
What are salaries like there? Is it even comparable?

yeah I saw that - I looked on salary.com and I would take a half pay cut to move there.

i would never want to live in Texas though- real estate is about location - houses don't cost much to build - its the property that costs money here.

Exactly why it's all relative. Although a smaller portion of their smaller income goes to housing costs.

Re: So for $270,000

Those are amazing houses!

Texas is very nice. My parents live outside of Houston in Sugar Land. You can definitely get a lot for your money. But like others have said, I would have had to take a huge salary cut to live there as well. Also, it is very HOT in the summers in Texas. i lived there for a year while I was going to grad school. Just something to keep in mind. It is almost the opposite as New York. People go out in the winter and stay in during the summer.

Good luck!
