Re: So for $270,000
yeah, TX is crazy cheap. They are well BELOW the nat. average for home prices. I was watching house hunters last night and they were in Fort Worth buying a gorgeous house for under 200K. What are salaries like there? Is it even comparable?

For what DH does it was almost $20,000 more a year. I really dont want to move there but the houses are just so cheap.

yeah I saw that - I looked on salary.com and I would take a half pay cut to move there.
i would never want to live in Texas though- real estate is about location - houses don't cost much to build - its the property that costs money here.

It's amazing how much house you can get for your $$ in other parts of the country, and in many cases, the salaries aren't substantially different!

I wouldn't want to live in TX either. You are right, it is because LI is a desirable place to live that the prices are so high. What is interesting though is in that report that came out last week about affordability of LI housing is that the housing prices have skyrocketed in the last 5-6 years, but salaries did not increase accordingly. LIers used to make well above the nat. average and now they are pretty much on par with the rest of the country.

Re: So for $270,000
It's great to have a beautiful house like that and all, but what good is it if noone will come to visit and noone to entertain for. Friends and family would all be here. I understand cheaper living, less worries on bills.........but I know we'd be so lonely and probably unhappy.
Thats just how I see it. And also my opinion.

Oh I agree thats why we havent done it yet, I have always had ALL of my family in a 10 mile radius my whole life. Just the thought of leaving I get chest pains, but realistically I cant by a house on LI, without being concerned about a schools and the area we would have to settle for just to have a house. Upside is my brother lives in NC and my mom will most likely move closer to us once we find a spot. I was freaked out when I moved out of my mothers house and moved 2 towns over. ( we are really close) Its life and sometimes you just have to do it. But Texas, a bit far for me, Ideally I would like to stay on the east coast, GA, SC Virginia.
