No. I think don't think it's necessary if we are all exchanging gifts. I do send them to the kids at work who give me holidays gifts, though. But not family.
Same - not to family or others I'm exchanging withh - but always to my students.

Usually not. If it is an exchange or in person where I can say thank you I do not follow up with a card. If I receive a gift that is a surprise or the person is not around (mailed or dropped off) then I usually will send a card.

I get a check from my aunt every b-day and Christmas so I send a thank you. We also send her a gift card every Christmas. But to family members I'm exchanging with I don't.
