I would definitely do it. This is not personal. This is dollars in your pocket. It probably makes them feel good to do this for their children. Imagine if you were in a position to do it for your kids one day.

Not a hand-out..it's an excellent opportunity.

Go for it. It's not a handout and so what if it was. Parents love to do things like this for their children especially if they have made smart financial moves that enable them to live comfortably like your parents have. This is a blessing. Bayside is a gorgeous area!

Re: What would you do? Any thoughts?

Who cares what your friends think? Why in the world should there be ANY shame in allowing your parents to help you out early in your marriage? If they've worked hard, and want to help out their children, that's admirable. My MIL gave us the down payment to our house, and without it we would have never been able to afford it. I think it's a wonderful thing, and if I were you, I'd go for it in a heartbeat.

I would most likely go for your parent's home as long as you are comfortable w/ the deal. You mentioned that you may want to sell in 5-7 years. Would your parent's have an issue w/ that? I know my mom would probably be mad if she made me this offer and then I sold it shortly there after.

How would they feel if you sold the house in 5 years?

If there is no moral obligation to never sell the family house, the house is what you want (or mostly) and you will be happy with the purchase, then go for it.

They would probably decide to retire sooner and move to Las Vegas. They would also probably live in the house we are living in now so they have somewhere to stay when they go back and forth to LV.

We have talked to them about only living there 4-5 years and then selling, but we definitley have to make sure that they realize that is what we are definitley going to do.

Re: What would you do? Any thoughts?

My Dh and I bought our house in Forest Hills from his father in 2004. The house we bought was not his primary home but we were already living in it and paying him rent. We bought the house for $250K which was half of the appraised value in 2004. My father in law was the one who approached us about the deal and price. I never felt guilty because it was something he really wanted to do. We paid all of the closing cost and lawyer fees so the deal didn't cost him a penny.

Fast forward to now, we are currently selling the home for over $800K. My father in law is happy that we are making a profit and although I now feel a bit guilty.

Go for the deal. You have nothing to lose. I have no regrets about buying this home and will hopefully be buying my next home outright (no mortgage) because of my father in law's generosity.

If I had the opportunity to purchase my parent's home, I would.
