Teacher Suspended Over 'Puerto Ricans Destroying Orlando' Letter

An Orange County elementary school teacher was suspended Wednesday over a letter asking for laws to be changed to prevent Puerto Ricans from coming to Orlando because they are "destroying the city every day," according to a Local 6 News report.

A handwritten letter by Sadler Elementary School teacher Jan Hall was addressed to a congressman and published in a local Spanish newspaper.

Hall's letter said Hispanics are causing American students to fall behind in school, Local 6 News reported.

"Schools are dealing with too many problems which originate in the language differences and that takes teaching time away from our American children whose parents do pay taxes," the letter said.

The letter has angered parents and members of the Hispanic community.

"I don't think she should be teaching at all," parent Betsy Santos said.

The Orange County School Board took action Wednesday after reading the letter.

"She has been removed from Sadler Elementary and will not be returning to Sadler Elementary regardless of the outcome of the investigation," Orange County Schools spokesman Frank Kruppenbacher said.

Local 6 News has learned that attorneys are looking into numerous comments in the letter.

"Puerto Rican teachers who work at my school are constantly asking me for help with math because they only received the equivalent of a fifth-grade education in Puerto Rico," the letter said.

"The letter was written by an employee of our district that contained information that does not reflect the views of this school district or its leadership," Kruppenbacher said. "Nor is it condoned by this leadership."

Hall confessed to the school's principal Wednesday morning that she wrote a letter but said she forgot who she wrote it to, Local 6 News reported.

An investigation has been launched.

Hall remains on unpaid suspension from the school.

excuse me b*TCH, but my uncle and aunt, who just happen to be Puerto Rican, and just recently moved to the Orlando area from Maryland, are VERY well educated, their daughter maintained a 95 gpa in HS, and starts FSU tomorrow, and just bought a $380K house, not to mention the TAXES they're going to be paying as residents of Orlando!!!!
oh, and btw, THEY are Americans TOO!!!!

ORLANDO - A teacher who has been at the center of a racial controversy that she herself created, Jan P. Hall, had previously written another polemical letter in which she also attacked Hispanics, according to information provided by Orange school district investigators to El Nuevo Día.
In 2002, Hall sent a letter to the Orange County School District Superintendent, Ronald Blocker, complaining about Oscar Aguirre, director of Englewood Elementary, where Hall worked at the moment.

In the letter, Hall accused Aguirre of being a womanizer and not being qualified to perform his duties as school director, said Alfredo López, who lead the investigation three years ago and is currently investigating Hall once again in connection her recent letter, published by this newspaper.

Las Wednesday, El Nuevo Día published a letter with a strong racist content signed by Mrs. Hall, in which she accuses Puerto Ricans of destroying the city of Orlando and blames Hispanics in general for lowering the academic level of English-speaking students. As a result of the letter’s disclosure, the School District suspended the teacher without pay.

Unfounded

After investigating the case in 2002, López decided that Hall’s accusations were unfounded, so no measures were taken against Aguirre.
López added that once the investigation concluded, he sent the teacher a warning on behalf of the School District, giving her a reprimand “because her letter to Blocker was not professionally written.”

According to Aguirre, Hall did not agree with the changes he introduced to the teaching methods at Englewood, where he established a dual bilingual education project to benefit the school”s students, the majority of which are Hispanics.

“I established an effective program based on believing in our children, and they responded to it. They were taught 50% in English and 50% in Spanish, so everyone could learn both languages,” he said.
He added that “children are loved because they are children, not because of their race or ethnic origin.”

The teacher, of Mexican origin, held that his mission was to help advance the community, and he worked and trained hard with the other teachers in order to achieve it.

I am glad it's an unpaid suspension.

If she knew anything, she'd know that there is a huge achievement gap between white students and students of color; that's the real disgrace. There is probably NO evidence to support the idea that they are the cause of white children falling behind.

Well - I'm actually glad that she was moronic enough to write the letter and now get herself suspended! I'd rather someone like her "out" themselves and get kicked out of their positions rather than quietly going around discriminating against kids and poisoning her classes with her ridiculous views!
