Re: Anyone here live in central CT?
I currently live in the town that is the geographic center of CT, lol. So I can definitely tell you about some towns!
My absolute favorite area is the Farmington Valley. When we first drove through CT (when we were considering moving here) we fell in love with it. The towns are Farmington, Avon, Simsbury and Canton. They are gorgeous towns and all of them have excellent schools. Avon is actually the #2 school district in the state and I taught there before I had my 2nd daughter. Avon is pretty wealthy, as are parts of the other towns. But there are still affordable houses, plus the taxes are not bad at all.
We just bought a house in Farmington and it's 2900 sq ft on a cul-de-sac with about a half acre of land....the cost was in the mid-300's and our taxes are $4,000 a year.
These towns are all (western) suburbs of Hartford, and there are some nice towns east of Hartford as well...but where I am now is only 2 hours away from my parent's house on LI (Bellmore). Another nice town east of Hartford is Glastonbury...
Some towns to stay away from in Central CT: Bristol, Plainville (I live there now, ugh), New Britain....
Let me know if you need anymore help!

Re: Anyone here live in central CT?
My brother lives in Shelton (actually the town is called Huntington). He loves it there. Its about 1.5 hours from where we are on LI.
We vacation near Moodus, Haddam, Essex, etc. That's a little further away, but beautiful nonetheless.

It is funny how many towns have similar names to LI towns. When I was up in CT - I lived next to Woodbury - also a LI town.

I completely agree with all of this. I LOVE Avon, Simsbury, and Farmington. I'd also look into Glastonbury and West Hartford although I've heard the quality of the schools in West Hartford has been declining. I think West Hartford is still pretty good, but I think the other towns have better schools.
We have friends who bought a great house in West Hartford (about 2 years ago) for around $300,000. There are definitely great afforable areas in central CT.
There are also great areas that are a bit closer to NY (off I-84): Woodbury, Southbury, and Middlebury.
I lived in central CT for 3 years and will be moving back up there in January. Let me know if you need any help.

Re: Anyone here live in central CT?
you ladies are the BEST!
I'm going to take you up on your offer for more info.
I need to know what the utility costs are in central CT as well as avg property taxes. I know that the property taxes vary - I have been checking out some areas on an MLS site. What are the state taxes and do you have to pay taxes on your cars every year? also, what are the car insurance costs as compared to LI?
TY!

When we first moved there 20 years ago there was very little there. We had 3 acres. Now you don't really get that with new contruction.
It was a nice town and has good schools. But we're all glad to be back on LI - cause the family is here.

The taxes really vary by town. I've seen some towns that are around $4,500 - 5000 (I think West Hartford), and others that are much higher such as Glastonbury (closer to $7000 - 9000). I pay taxes on my car twice per year (I could probably pay one lump sum, but 1/2 is due in January and the other 1/2 in July). I'm pretty sure the amount of the tax depends on the town where you live. I don't remember how much I pay, but I think it's a couple hundred dollars (I don't think it's more than $500 - 600 per year). I think my car insurance has been pretty high b/c I lived in cities, but I don't think there's much of a difference in rates especially if you live in the suburbs.

I also live in CT-I live along the coast in Milford. It's nice, but I agree with the above poster. The Farminton Valley area is GORGEOUS! and the home are still affordable. We live in New HAven county which is where Middlebury is located. I ahve a friend who lives in Middlebury-ABSOLUTELY gorgeous, so clean and ncie! she pays very little taxes and it's really nice there! We are looking to move up there when I get out of school and stuff.
Good luck to you! I just moved here myself, but if I can help you with anything, please let me know!!
