Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

Anyone else still suffering from these harmless yet CREEPY bugs? It's been too long now..they are not dying off - today while working in the basement I killed about five HUGE crickets (they don't make noise).
It's getting out of hand :( I really don't want to pay someone to come and kill them. I thought it was just the south shore - however my SIL in the north shore just started getting them too. These crickets are FREAKING ME OUT. Help! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

my stepdaughter said they have them at her Mom's house too, they are sort of shore shore. I've never heard of it before, I guess an exterminator is the only solution.

Re: Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

I had 3 of them in my house one day last week. After screaming for 10 min while trying to catch it I realized what it was. My neighbors were all complaining about them too. South Shore here too

Re: Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

I've had a couple, on occasion. I have found that they appear when I let the basement get a bit damp. If I make sure the dehumidifier is doing its job then I've been fine. They are some nasty bugs though. They give me the creeps!

We have them too. The ones that jump several feet when you get near them to kill them. Uggh, I can't wait until they go away for the winter. We don't do any exterminating because of the kids.

We have them EVERY YEAR!!! We live in E. Northport in a basement apartment (thank goodness we are closing on a condo soon....)
They are the CREEPIEST looking things I have ever seen! The weather needs to get cold so they will die!!!!

Re: Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

My mom has had about 5 in her house in the last month!! Mostly in the laundry room (1st floor) and one in her bedroom (3rd floor). She's in oceanside.

But we were wondering.. are they crickets??? They kinda look like them, but the ones my mom has in her house have really long skinny legs like spiders and a body that looks like a shrimp almost. Chat Icon Any idea what those are?

ETA: They jump like crazy when you go near them or turn on the light.

I don't think they are crickets, they don't seem to make noise. They jump SO HIGH when you go in their direction!

That's what I told my mom... they would be making noise if they were crickets. I gotta do some research, they are scary!!

Believe it or not, I never saw a cricket until I moved to LI. I lived in NYC for about 15 years, and before that, in NJ with my parents. There must have been crickets, but I don't remember them.

The first time I ever saw one was in our basement storage unit. I thought they were weird jumping spiders, until DH explained what they were.

But yes, we still have them in the basement storage area. I would think they should be gone soon.

Re: Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

Yeah, those are totally them! They are camel crickets - and they are the ones that DON'T make noise.

Here's what we do. We take one of the newspapers in its original plastic and use it as our "cricket wacker". I stealth kill them with these - but you have to be QUICK and wack them fast. They ooze too - they are like these big nasty creatures. They're just so gross (just like the picture).

Re: Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

My aunt had them and she had to "bomb" her basement - I really don't want to do that b/c I don't want to expose us to chemicals.

Re: Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

I was reading that they love cardboard boxes (to eat) and the dampness of the basement. The reason why they jump at you is because their vision is so bad. They don't know if they're jumping at you or away from you.Chat Icon

Re: Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

We found 3 last year in our basement........and not one since. We did get an exterminator but I am so thankful not one since. I had no clue what these crazy spider/shrimp/cricket things were until I researched them too.

My friend keeps getting them and is petrified.........who isnt???

But that is interesting as I read a post above that dehumidifiers seem to keep them away and we have ours on all the time. No wonder why we havent see any.

So that must be the trick. I have to tell my friend to get one.

Re: Crickets, Crickets, go AWAY!

We grew up with them in valley stream. My borhter and I had our rooms in the basement, every year we would chase them into each others room as to not have to see them.

We then would just leave the vacuum out and suck them up as we saw them.

They are horrible
