capping a sprinkler head?

does anyone know if it is possible to cap off an in ground sprinkler head and make it unusable? We have this little plant area behind our deck that we would like to brick off and use for garbage cans but we have in ground sprinklers and there is a head in the middle of the patch. We're new to home ownership so we know diddly about this sorta stuff Chat Icon

I think you can. I just wanted to add that I had to replace some sprinkler heads and Lowes has a larger selection of brands than Home Depot does.

My Dh says that you have to remove the sprinkler head at the base and thread a cap or plug on it. You can buy them at Home Depot.

This is correct. I did something similar during the summer. I needed to replace the sprinkler head with a spray head.

Turn off your sprinkler system. Dig the head up. The tubing in the ground is very tough but your DH should be able to pull it out enough to get to the sprinkler head. Once you get to the head you will see that the tubing connects from either side. You need to pull the head off by twisting back and forth. Once you get it off, replace it with this part. This will twist on in the same manner, back and forth. Good Luck!
