Somethings fishy-

So my mom calls me before and tells me this story-

Today she was home, and the Fed Ex guy came and handed her a Dell box...

She was a little confused- since she hadnt ordered anything- but proceeded to open it...

It was a laptop, and whatever paper work saying how it was all put together, whatever upgrades, and the cost...

She immediately called my dad and asked if he had ordered one- he of course said no, she then asked if maybe work had ordered one for him... he again replied with no...

So she calls Dell to explain she did not order this, the guy on the phone says the order was purchased in my dads name- and it dosent seem to be a fraudgalent account, whomever ordered it verified all info... including his mothers maiden name...

When my dad gets home- he then calls dell.. and says"well Im so and so- and I can tell you right now- I didnt order it..."

Well- turns out someone in Manhatten opened this Dell account in my dads name- verified all his info- originally was having it shipped to Manhatten but later on changed the shipping address (my mom wasnt sure if the person changed the shipping address or someone at dell changed it) to my parents home address...

This is the 2nd time something like this has happened to my parents... which to me is a little strange considering they dont put any info on the computer, and they dont even have credit cards...

Just goes to show how frequent indentity theft happens....

Im sure- but my mom didnt say....

They are having fed-ex come pick up the computer- and sending my dad an affidavit to sign- they are closing the accout, and then they(Dell) said they will look into...

I was thinking the same thing. It's not too hard to find out - particularly if someone has a family tree online.

eta. I hope he's putting a fraud alert on his credit cards.

Re: Somethings fishy-

Something VERY similiar happened to my husband about 7 years ago. A Gateway computer was delivered to his apartment on his birthday. He thought his dad bought it for him Chat Icon

Turns out someone got ahold of his credit card number somehow. The card company alerted the FBI. The perp attempted to use the card number again a few days later and they were able to nab him.

At that time, the FBI told my husband that crooks can sometimes get your number from a credit card receipt. (Merchants are supposed to block out most of the number, but I have found a few still do not...)

So let's say you pay your restaurant check with a CC and leave the signed copy on the table -- someone can get the number. (Or someone who works at the restaurant now has a copy of your number...)

Also, maybe they got the maiden name from peoplefinders.com or one of those other sites?

Re: Somethings fishy-

something like this recently happened to my Dad down in Fl- someone got his SS #- he had to call all the credit agencies and put a password on there - so any time he applies for credit he will have to give this password

he thinks the people at his new doctors office took the info- since that is the only new thing he has done
