I was wondering this too.

On the flipside of my other thread, I have been on the LIRR with some drunken a-holes with beer in their hands and wanted to smack someone!

I *think* its because the LIRR has bar cars on certain trains and also sells beer on some of the platforms. Since they make money from it - it's legal!

I could be totally wrong about this but that is what someone told me a while ago.

I didn't know that.
I've seen so many people drink beer on the weekend trains - they just keep the bottle in a paper bag.

I am interpretting it as you are able to drink in Penn Station bars of course, on the platforms where it is sold and in the bar cars but not all cars. But not in the general waiting areas, corridors, along the councourse, etc.

Yeah, I was going to say... does it make a difference if it's in a brown bag??

I had a good one last night. He was having loud arguments through the window to the people waiting on the platforms. It was a sight indeed.Chat Icon

Re: Spinoff: Why is it ok to drink alcohol on the LIRR...

i thought you were allowed to drink on all trains. did they change the rules recently?

a few years ago, I got into a bit of trouble for drinking while on line for a concert. i had it in a paperbag. just as i was going to throw it out a cop pulls us to the side and asked to see our ID. we figured it was b/c we looked young and they were trying to nab underage drinking. so they start writing out tickets for us saying we have an open container and you cant drink alcohol in public. we kept saying, but it is in a paper bag, and they said it doesnt matter it is open. Chat Icon so then we questioned but you can drink in penn station and on the LIRR etc. he states that is owned by LIRR and you can drink on their property and it isnt state property etc. so it is allowed there.

it was such an annoying ordeal. we got tickets, but ones that we didnt have to pay. instead we had to go to family court and take a quality of life class and got put on probation for 6 months in NYC. basically if we did anything wrong in those 6 months then we would be in more trouble. the record got thrown out after 6 months.

it was so stupid. Chat Icon now, i live overseas and i have the freedom to walk around with a beer in public, or have a glass of wine at a picnic with my husband. sometimes i do not understand american laws.

AFAIK, they did. something about people being bombed when they got off the train and then driving and lawsuits.
