Does anyone want to see the cake I made for Emily's Birthday Party that is today?-ETA a few pics from her party!
Shameless x-post from Parenting....
This was my first shot making a special kinda cake. My mom's friend used to make them for her kids when we were little and I always loved them -- so I was excited to make one for Emily for her birthday.
It certainly isn't perfect but I am *SO* proud of it and so glad that I made her cake myself instead of having it done at a bakery.
I didn't use any molds -- just round cake pans and then cut the circles to shape ----And I colored the icings myself with food coloring and then used a piping bag. Hopefully I'll get better at doing it each year.
and the best part is is that it's safe for my Mom to eat too because she has Crohn's Disease and can't have dairy. If I had gotten it from a bakery (which is what usually happens at parties) my mom wouldn't have been able to have cake...

I made it from scratch and subsituted dairy free margarine (Fleishman's is dairy free - it's what my mom always uses) and soy milk for the regular kinds.

Ahh, I see. I think I might try that, for some reason dairy has been giving me a hard time lately. Old age, I think
