Anyone else hear this...
I was talking to someone at work today-
After I told her Ryan had strep she said "Thats wierd" I asked why- and she said that her Dr told her that usually children dont get that kinda infection until @ least 2 years of age....
Im a little freaked out about this.... if this is true how and why did Ryan get it-
My child isnt around other kids- and really isnt around alot of people other than family... so its not like he is surrounded by germs ever...

I've never heard that. I don't see why that would even ring true.

Re: Anyone else hear this...
My son was tested twice for strep. I don't think they would test if it did not occur at his age.

Re: Anyone else hear this...
I thought I heard a while ago that they couldn't get it until they were about a year old. But I don't know for sure.

Re: Anyone else hear this...
yes! I heard that from my Ped last year when Aidan tested positive for Strep.
But its not true at all.
They weren't even going to test him. He isn't around alot of other children. (even less so at the time)
I guess the thinking is its just something that babies have less of a chance of getting than school kids. But its absolutely possible for infants/babies to get Strep.

Re: Anyone else hear this...
See I was sick about 2 weeks ago-
The Dr did not test for strep (since I didnt have a sore throat) but put me on an antibiotic- I never filled the script- since I try to let me body work out things like this- since Im so scared of antibiotics making my BCP not effective-
Anyways- I wondering if I gave him my germs- and this is just how it effected him
Ry is a year old....
But this "theory" really freaks me out... why does my son have it then?

Re: Anyone else hear this...
I also heard that kids under a certain age can't get strep. I forgot the age though. Both old and new ped told me this.

Re: Anyone else hear this...
Right, when I asked the Ped how he might of gotten it if the risk is so low for babies, I basically got the answer "anywhere".
Aidan had a "strep rash" (red pin spots on belly) but wasn't outwardly sick. Now if he hadn't been tested and put on antibiotics he could have been spreading it. So other children who are not treated can also spread it with out knowing about it I guess.
If you google babies and strep, they all begin saying how low the chances are but not impossible.
I can only imagine he got it from a child/adult who had not been treated yet or possiblly a public place like a supermarket cart, still boggles my mind cause I used those cart liners!

See the whole thing freaks me out-
My child has not "sick" symptoms.... he had no red throat- clear ears, no swollen glands... needless to say my DR was floored when his strep culture came back positive....
Could he just be a carrier- w/o even feeling sick? (My mom swears thats how my brother was when we were little)

Re: Anyone else hear this...
Did they do a strep test? or they diagnosed him visually? If they did it visually, it could be a misdiagnosis. I've also heard not to worry about strep with an infant from my pediatrician. I had a sore throat, fever last Thursday which has now turned into a low grade fever & a cold.
But strep isn't something to play around with - if he has it, he needs an antibiotic. My co-worker's son has undiagnosed strep for months because it didn't come up on the traditional test. By the time they had him retested with a strep blood test, he had rheumatic fever that did heart damage. You're better safe than sorry. As I said before, something sounds like it was brewing. He's an antibiotic which will help him fight off anything else that anyone brings to the Saturday's party.

No they did a culture- and it was positive and he has been on antibiotic since Monday

Re: Anyone else hear this...
Obviously, the person who is giving you this information , is either
a. not a prent at all b. a fairly new parent c. just likes to hear themselves talk
a child can get any sort of an illness at anytime there is no age limit. don't worry, strep is fairly common and unless your child gets it alot there is really nothing to sorry about... So don't worry your baby is fine =)
