DH got bit by the North Carolina bug!
One of DH's coworkers just moved to N.C. and he's raving about the home prices down there.
Everynow and then DH gets on a kick about moving to Florida and starts looking at homes.
This week he's all about North Carolina. Last night he kept calling me to come into the computer room and look at different homes.
I appease him and look, but reality is we both have good jobs here and don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

that's how it started for us too. We were throwing around the idea of FL, then I saw a poster or 2 mention Charlotte. We looked up houses and jobs, we were sold.

That's how it started for us too. Leave? Never! I had a great job at my dream company and the possibility of a promotion in the near future. But Atlanta won! And I have no regrets!
Good luck!!

Re: DH got bit by the North Carolina bug!
I'm debating whether to show DH your post, b/c he'll def. want to check it out further.
He was looking at homes online in Cary, Wake Forrest & Morrisville. All in the same areas.
Anyone know what the job market like is down there? ETS: I re-read your post and you said unemployment is low. But are there large companies down there?
How far of a commute is it to Raleigh?

Cary, NC was voted the 5th best place to live in the country. link That's where we're looking as well. My husband works for Morgan Stanley right now as an accountant. He spoke to some people and they said that finding a job in finance in NC is not a problem. There is a large industry for finance and teaching supposedly. Cary is growing by the second so many fields are available for work (according to my research).
Also Wake Forest is the school district for the areas you mentioned and supposedly, it's TOPS in the country as well!!

ETA: Wake Forest is part of Wake country - so it's all the same SD (as Raleigh, Cary, etc)

Re: DH got bit by the North Carolina bug!
It's getting harder and harder to find reasons why we shouldn't look into this further!
I work in Corporate Finance and DH works in IT. It sounds like we should be able to find decent jobs. Of course, that's the first thing my parents would say...well where are you going to work???
Sounds too good to be true.

Re: DH got bit by the North Carolina bug!
in regards to the mention of NC needing teachers....they REALLY do...but the pay is
in one county he got an email from (he gets emails from NC public schools all the time) FH would make, with a masters degree and four years experience, barely $30K, and only top out at $50K in 25 years.

Re: DH got bit by the North Carolina bug!
I have to say, about the teacher thing, that I'm shocked. My aunt has a Bachelor's in Business and a few Master's classes...no Master's, nothing in teaching. And she started in Atlanta as a Spanish teacher at $42K. Will be making $60K once she gets her Master's. It maxes out at $85K, I think.
I'm surprised NC is so much less money...maybe it's the area?

link that is not bad at all for a brand new teacher. my sis was making a little more than that as a NYC teacher WITH a Masters.... until last year when they got a raise.

Yes, as clearly written above.
An almost 20K difference is huge. That has to be wrong. It's a major metropolitan city.
If not Meaghan, I hope he's able to find better pay...or that you both get raises and the housing market continues downward so that you could buy in LI!

Re: DH got bit by the North Carolina bug!
i understand the cost of living is less - but taking half paycut (and it was $32K for his fourth year - it was guildford county though)
but when your student loan payments are $250 a month, that is not going to change!
ETA: Thanks Sasha
