I think it is extremely rude for people to ask to bring siblings. However, I probably would have handled it the same way you did and just suck it up. Kids birthday parties are completely out of control. My kids are older now but still want celebrations. My husband I decided to limit it to $500 per kid on the parties though. And for us, the party is their gift. They don't get anything in addition to the party.

Not to change the subject but my friend just had someone respond to her daughter's bridal shower with a plus one. Someone my friend doesn't even know, a coworker of the invitee.
Sorry but you need to have a set to do that.

That is so rude and frankly it's bizarre!

>> This sounds like it might get out of control and your wife is trying to keep up with the Jones’ by spending as much as the other parents.

I think my wife watches too much HGTV.
We just had a little disagreement because she wants to have: bagels, pastries, other snacks for when people show up. She was looking to buy a K Cup coffee maker for people to use.
I think thats way too much to do.

Anyway to tell people not to bring a gift but a gift card instead? (like weddings) :)

I am confused, what would HGTV have to do with throwing a party?

The lack of manners in people is so astounding to me. I would never ask if I can bring a sibling to a birthday party that my other child was invited to. And I know you already said yes, but I would have said that due to space limitations, siblings are unfortunately unable to attend this time.

As for the food, they probably don't have a license to serve food, which is required by the County health dept I'm thinking? Many places that host birthday parties don't provide food.

I def wouldnt get a Keurig for this! It is nice though to have some beverages available for the parents (even just water)..

For siblings, I find it is uncommon at school age. We had it happen in daycare as nobody really dropped off and families had a parent who worked on weekends.

>> The coffee maker thing is over the top. You can get a box of Joe from Dunkin Donuts if you want to provide coffee to the parents.

Her point is: the Dunkin Donuts coffee is around $20. But if you pay X then you can use it again for future parties.
I understand the thought....I brought a pair of ice skates when I was 18 (Its on sale for $20, and rentals are $5, I just need to skate 4 times in my life to break even - I have yet to use them in 30 years)

>> THis is definitely too much. You are going to feed them breakfast and then an hour and a half later feed them lunch?

Not even an hour and a half - arrival time is 11, we are planning on pizza at 11:45.
But the food isn't for the kids, She wants stuff for the parents to snack on while the kids are playing.
Since the parents are not allowed to be on the gym floor, she thinks they'll hang in the party room and chit chat and eat.

>> I am confused, what would HGTV have to do with throwing a party?

Isn't that the channel with all the Martha Stewart type things?
Where people have elaborate events and so on.
I know they take tiny houses and turn them into some giant over the top thing.

My plan was to have some snacks for people upon arrival. From Costco, box of chips and box of cookies, etc (each box usually has like 20-30 packs), and 2 packs of drinks (which would be about 50 drink boxes) and a pack of 24 water bottles.
But she said that parents want coffee and tea and so on.
So for them she wants pastries, croissants, fruit (thats what she has decided on so far)

I have to be honest, this is a lot of thought and planning for a children's birthday party. I was in the party business for a while and most people just relied on us to take care of everything. Next time you might want to go with a place that is more full service so you can just book the party and show up. At the end of the day, it will probably end up costing you the same at this rate.

I wouldn't get perishables. You might end up with lots of food not eaten. Cookies and chips sound like a better idea; but I'd also get "healthier" stuff for the parents (like nuts, dried fruit).

For the Keurig, I still think it is too much. I understand her reasoning, but I live in the city and I don't have enough storage... Unless it is something you will use daily. You don't know what kind of parties you will have in the future or where.

This!

I feel like this "party" is way too much work and money for the time frame. I would cancel and do something all inclusive if your willing to throw money here and there.

All I see on that channel is updating and buying houses. Nothing that really deals with children’s parties lol

You are definitely over thinking this. If you really want coffee, get a box of Joe and have it out upon arrival. Then serve pizza and juice/water at the end, followed by cake. Have enough pizza and cake for adults.

My DD is 7 and if you were in a suburb I would say you probably won’t get many parents who stay. But in the city, I would guess it depends on proximity to where you and all these kids live. If it’s a trek, I could see the parents not wanting to leave and come back. Even still, you do not have to provide 2 meals in the span of an hour and a half.

I would be careful on the nuts because of all the children that have nut allergies now. Also a lot of places are nut free.

Re: Do we need to say this on a birthday invite?

No one should buy a keurig to only use for parties. Also you have to put the cup in and wait for it to make the coffee, just get a box from DD like everyone else said. Because next thing is $$ on K-cups, different flavors, creamers, fancy cups.. the rabbit hole will be quite deep. Your wife may even suggest a barista to serve it.. kidding lol. But you get my point.

I think you guys are trying to elevate and fancy up a normal, fun kids place. Stop driving yourselves crazy. Have normal food, normal drinks, let kids be kids and be done.

I would skip all the adult items. Most parents are not going to be looking for anything and many if not all will be brining their own coffee or water with them. Don't waste your money. Have some extra pizza when the kids do if they want to grab a slice.

Do we need to say this on a birthday invite?

Party has passed and it was a success

The place was Ferox Athletics in Brooklyn.
https://feroxathletics.com/
if you scroll down on the main page you can see pictures of the location.

Wife arrived an hour early (they told us we are allowed to arrive an hour early to setup) - they brought my wife to the room and then left - she did all the decoration setup herself (its not part of their work to do the decoration setup).

There was some drama when the guests arrived - they tried to tell us that EVERYONE needed a ticket, not just the kids. EVERYONE who goes into the gym needs a ticket.
Wife argued for a bit, not sure if this is a new rule or what, but finally they agreed that only the kids would need tickets (which is what the manager told us on the phone while we were planning things)

I ended up buying 10 pizza pies from Costco (the one in LIC is only about 15-20 minutes from Ferox in brooklyn) and the cake from Costco. (I also got a box of chips and a box of cookies and a couple of packs of juice from costco ahead of time)

Wife brought instant coffee and a hot water pot, 3 different kinds of cookies, she made a bunch of sandwiches, she cut fruit (strawberries, grapes and something else), and some other stuff (forgot what else) - needless to say, most of that was untouched.

Heck, most of the pizza was untouched also. the kids didn't want to stay for pizza/cake - they kept trying to leave the room to go back to the floor to play.

The kids definitely liked the location and the stuff to do there - they didn't care about the pizza or even the cake - they just wanted to go back and play.

Wife is already talking about what type of food she should make for DD's birthday in the summer :(

Glad the kids enjoyed. Dont waste time/ money on the food. From my experience, most adults wont eat or will just take a slice of pizza.
